If you truly meant Good Game with sincerity, why would you show a lack of common courtesy as well as a sign of laziness and disrespect to your target audience by using the text type "GG"?

Simple - I don't type GG - I type "Well Fought" or "Well Played" or "Good Game"

HOWEVER a lot of people cannot type as well or as fast as I can - there are a great deal many people I know who struggle to even get "GG" typed out before the match closes. - might want to think about that for a while before you claim laziness or disrespect.
Of course now if you assume that their inability to type faster makes them instantly rude that sure explains a lot about you doesn't it?

I don't feel like going under the bridge to drag you out Shar

I would love to know what bridge you think I am under.
You assume I am trolling.
My stance from the beginning has been simply that you cannot assume they mean to troll just because they typed out "GG" and you didn't think it was.
If that is trolling then I guess you would consider anyone who stands up for others to be trolli..... OH WAIT! that would include you wouldn't it?

There are three sides to every story
The side you are on
The side the other person is on
The side of the observers.

Just because you do not like the side the other person is on does not make them a troll - any more than them disliking YOUR side makes you a troll.

I say one more time:
"GG" ITSELF IS NO MORE TROLLING OR RUDE THAN "HELLO" OR ANY OTHER WORD.
YOU REMOVE THE ABILITY OF THE TRUE JACKASSES TO TYPE THAT THEY WILL SIMPLY FIND ANOTHER WAY TO SHOW THEIR ASS - THUS REMOVING THAT SOLVES NOTHING.
Villianizing it only gives the true trolls more powe..... OH WAIT.

Guess we know where you stand now huh?

...See how bad those assumptions can hurt?

I don't agree with that guys comments but even a slow typer like me could manage to type good game in before everyone else has completely left. Anyone playing online games must be pretty good with a keyboard right? And no offense but you sound like your totally trolling:( .
On topic I don't mind people who say gg. Even watching the players after a game of football or whatever sport is local for you you can tell some of them don't mean it or care, its just polite.;)

If you ever drop in a match with Gwilliy he will almost never type anything.

You use different parts of your brain to control the characters/mechs in games than you do to type out words or the like.

Rather like how being good at Baseball will not automatically make you good at Tennis.
Similar skills - but different enough to not necessarily cross over.

It's a fairly sad day when people are debating whether it's ok to say gg after a game. It's just a phrase, take it or leave it. I type 'gg' if I enjoyed the fight, regardless of whether I won or lost.

A few days ago my team stomped the other team 12-1. One of our lot spouted "GG" into chat. A guy on the other team said something along the lines of "like it was."
I responded with "Aye, it wasn't really-you were outweighed but you fought like hell considering-better luck next time."
Took me just a few secs to say something nice, and hopefully diffuse the guy's frustration. Hopefully he could see one of the stompers recognised the fact the match was unfair.

"you were outweighed, but you fought well" only takes a few secs longer than "gg" and sounds different to a frustrated loser.

"GG" WILL be interpreted negatively by losing teams, and considering people KNOW it can be-why say it? Spend 5 secs longer and say something nicer-or say nothing.
I reserve "GG" for my team only-there is absolutely NEVER any need to rub anyone's noses in it-except if you stomp a certain over arrogant clan......

gg after almost all matches, 85% of the time, it is good sportsmanship. I will probably say glhf (good luck and have fun) at the start of a match as well. GG is used if I feel it was a rather good and enjoyable match.

Even if it is a Lance of Ghost Bears, and we stomp the other team. Even if our Lance gets stompped, 'gg'.

If it is a good game, it is a good game.

Sadly this is the only online game I have played where that is so. :)
TF2, WoW, Starcraft(1).....only in this one do people react so negatively to those two letters.

As for spending that 5 seconds - once again, not everyone CAN. :P
So I at least will take the "GG" at face value.
(unless outright mockery is included - in which case the "face value" includes the mockery <_<)

Edit: Fixed a forgotten bit thanks to xTrident

You made the leaderboard at one point, cause I saw you. Not too shabby for fun loving mechwarrior.

Even made it into 3rd as I recall (that or 5th....I know it was top 5) <_<

Probably could have gotten higher, but I don't play on Sundays, and I wasn't going to push all that hard to begin with. :P
Mostly competed because the negative-nancies had me convinced no-one else was really going to bother. :)

I am a slow typer. by the time I type somehting out at the end of the match 90% of the people have disconnected. I have a couple of time tried to type three or doue words out and said screw it because the slew of diconnect notices.

I highly doubt that.

I know a lot of people are volleying for in game VOIP for a number of positive reasons. But, as an Xbox 360 gamer as well - playing most of the games I own online being able to chat via headset also allows for much more mockery, insulting and general negativity. A lot of times I don't wear the headset playing as a random because of it. Heaven forbid you win or lose a multiplayer match, the other team will have something negative to say about it. And that's where I'm coming from. It's so rare to win or lose a close game and have either team state such.

Point is, while I'd rather have VOIP or some kind of built in hands free chat, simply being able to type allows for much less negativity. So if "GG" irritates you just imagine what people being able to verbally heckle you might do.

Sorry, meant to type "only online game I have played" <_<

Which is probably one of the more important bits.....

Edit: also: this isn't the conversation about VOIP, this is the conversation about whether the term "GG" is itself offensive or not. :P
(/sarcasm_on: because the term "Good game" is and should be totally offensive /sarcasm_off)

I didn't mean to mention VOIP to start a conversation on whether or not we should have it. Focus more on my point of the negativity that can be said through such a thing and then bring it back to someone saying "GG" rather than the amount that can be said vocally. I didn't say it to set this thread off track, rather I stated it to bring in another perspective. I was actually stating such because while GG is a forum topic in this game of misinterpretation and taking it negatively it's absolutely nothing to the kind of shit that's out there.

So while I have an opinion on when I think it should and shouldn't be used, I'm also well aware how little of a deal this is considering what it could be.

No apology necessary. I have zero qualms debating with people that aren't jerks. You're not a jerk.

At least you'd be able to better recognize tone. But I think that's about it. If they hate "GG" displayed in text after a game but lobby for VOIP I'd personally see it as a bit of hypocrisy. But maybe not everyone has experienced what I have with it.

Fun fact of the day: I (personally) struggle with telling tones of voice apart.
(though with what very little experience I have had with XBonline...... that would possibly be a non-issue :P)

As for other people having experienced what you have with it, consider the fact that my first copy of Windows Vista ran better than any other OS I have used..... :)
(shocking I know - I spent years wondering what people were complaining about it for - until I had to replace it <_<)

There are exceptions to every rule (Including and excluding this one) so there very well may be people out there who (even after having used it!) may not have experienced what XBonline is infamous for.
Or perhaps they do not consider it to be rude - there are plenty of people who have never learned why F-U is considered rude..... :o
