There are 3 Variants for the Mauler that could be used.
MAL-1R
MAL-3R
MAL-1PT5 (now this one is debatable, it was only published in the German Solaris 7 set, but it is the Lineman in all but name)

The 1R is the only one in the time line. The C is Soon but the 2R and 3R aren't for a while yet.

Possible the Daboku could count as a separate variant, if they played with the hardpoints compared to the 1R

It's pretty clear, and essentially a given, that PGI is using only canonical variants for the non-Hero 'Mechs - so both the Linesman (which is actually a wholly separate 'Mech) and the MAL-1PT5 are invalid.
The Mauler's variants are as follows:
- MAL-1R: 3048
- MAL-C: 3051
- MAL-2R: 3060
- MAL-3R: 3062
- MAL-1K: 3069
IMO, the Mauler is likely to be reserved for future content for a post-3060 in-game time-skip.

I don't get what makes the Banshee so bad. =/
No hardpoints on most of the variants. For "non-primative"
we have 6 banshee variants
2475 - BNC-3E: STD380, RT: PPC, LT: AC/5, HD: SL (Stock 2E, 1B hardpoints)
2579 - BNC-3M: STD350, RT: PPC & ML, LT: PPC & ML, HD: SL (Stock 5E)
2915 - BNC-3Q: STD380, RT: AC/20, HD: SL (Stock 1E, 1B)
3026 - BNC-3S: STD285, RT: PPC 4ML 1 SRM 6, LT: 1 AC/10, LA, 1 PPC, CT&HD 1 SL (Stock 8E, 1B, 1M)
3037 - BNC-3MC (same as BNC-3E but upgrades the AC/5 to a 10)
So out of 5 variants. 1 isn't garbage, unless they turn 1 weapon into 3-4 hardpoints. None of them have JJs, and all of the weapons are usually drawn around the waist like the atlas.
The mech is shown to look really cool, but other than the 3S complete redesign it is a 95 ton mech that mounts Medium mech level weaponry.

Don't forget that the PGI mechs can have hard points above and beyond that the stock variant may suggest. So the lack of good hard points isn't a reason to dis-include a mech.

Banshee hero(my guess)-BNC-1E The original design first produced in 2445, this Banshee variant carries the PPC, Autocannon/5, and Small Laser of the later 3E, as well as a pair of Medium Lasers. As one of the largest 'Mechs produced with primitive technology, the engine was restricted to a top speed of 54km/h. More than twenty-two tons of Primitive Armor provided protection to the MechWarrior. The poor top speed of the Banshee-1E was the core design obstacle later engineers would try to overcome in the 3E series. They succeeded, but at the cost of firepower.[9]

Oooh, Yeah now I see. =/
But a lot of other mechs and variants with 3 or less HP's have had added hardpoints to make them customizable and viable. CPLT-A1 anyone? or how good would AWS-8Q be with 4 energy slots, one of which is a head laser? All Highlanders would pretty much be the same, 1B, 2E, 2M. with the 7336 having 3E, 2M. A lot of mechs would be terrible or have no variation with stock hardpoints.
BNC-3E: STD380, RT: PPC, LT: AC/5, HD: SL (Stock 2E, 1B hardpoints)
- Changed to +2E in RT. +1 or 2 B in LT. Would make a decent tanker with both arms free for soaking up damage. plus it would fit right in with the Dual AC/5-PPC meta.
BNC-3M: STD350, RT: PPC & ML, LT: PPC & ML, HD: SL (Stock 5E)
- All I could see done with this is maybe add one energy in each side torso for 7 energy slots. Maybe have better torso twist and such to compensate?
BNC-3Q: STD380, RT: AC/20, HD: SL (Stock 1E, 1B)
- yeah, okay. this one really sux. =/
BNC-3S STD285, RT: PPC 4ML 1 SRM 6, LT: 1 AC/10, LA, 1 PPC, CT&HD 1 SL (Stock 8E, 1B, 1M)
- hands down best variant of the bunch, no changes needed.
