It'd require an overhaul of the entire mech building system, which is why I doubt it'd ever happen. Especially if we go back to the Jagers:

-S: 6 tons
-DD: 6.5 tons
-A: 8 tons
-Firebrand: 10.5 tons.

Only one of these would ever be used, and everyone would scream PTW! faster than you can blink. So the mechs with less armor would need significantly better weapon hard points - to give them a reason to be - and this would require PGI to rethink everything. It's really a bit too late for that.

If the only chassis option for the Boom Jager was the -S, then you leave the players with a decision to make - high alpha glass cannon, or more armor with less force. But again, I think this is a lot more complicated than PGI (or most players, for that matter) really want.

In order to unlock elite, you need to possess 3 variants of the same mech with the basics unlocked. (then you can sell 2 if you want)
In order to unlock master you need to possess 3 mechs of one weight class with elite unlocked.

IE:
Buy 3 Spiders - unlock the basics on all 3 - sell two - keep working on one
Buy 3 Commando - unlock basics on all 3 - sell two - keep working on one
Buy 3 Jenner - you know the drill by now - keep working on the one
All three kept mechs are at elite - unlocks master for all 3
Sell the Jenner and Commando, you can still put the XP toward mastery into your Spider.

(I've been testing this with my Heavies - Cataphract, Thunderbolt, and Jager)

Keep in mind you can only spend earned XP for mechs you currently own.

I've got the Spider 5k that I've had for a while, I've got almost 20k extra in Mech XP... so I figured I'd buy the other variants to get the elite.... I just don't like the D or the V. So I was wondering if I could sell them after getting their basics.... and then use the elite on my trusty 5k

After you have got all 3 sets of basics unlocked that unlocks Elite - so long as you own all three at the same time you finish unlocking the 3rds final set of basics.

After that you can sell 2 of the three and continue working through the elite skills on the 1 remaining.

IE Jenner I have left is my (S) - and I worked through the elites AFTER selling the other 2 :D

You could, of course, base or adjust the maximums without deferring directly to the cannon stock load outs.

-S: 7.5 tons
-DD: 8.5 tons
-A: 9.5 tons
-Firebrand: 10.5 tons.

Or something. Really, how did we even get off on this discussion? I kinda feel bad for OP, even if I think he got his answers.

I think the Jagers are fine place to start.

Not fast but you can learn to aim with them and develop situational awareness with them because they are not very fast...You also can get kills, which is hard early on as a player, because soooooo many of us have gained the Mech XP needed to unlock Basic, Elite and Mastery of a specific chasis which does really make a big difference.

New players are at a handicap, but Jagers or LRM boats can get you some statisfaction of getting kills.

Spiders are really fun too... if you like the speed, buy 3 spiders and go through basic, Elite and Mastery of that chasis....

I'm pretty sure the choice most people would make in this example would just be to stop playing the JM6-S / DD and start playing the JM6-A. The only way this could be viable is if they solved the pinpoint alpha meta first. Speed may be life, but alpha is King. You might like the idea of squishier Jaggermechs now, but I guarantee you it would ruin or make overly powerful more than a few 'Mechs. Eg; the Jenner would be getting free extra armor, and the Victor would never be seen again.

Jenner gets free extra armor now.

Victors will still be seen. They outclass many heavies in armor still. They also outclass the Awesome in firepower and maneuverability, just not in armor.

Currently the Jenner D and K start with (respectively) 128 and 125 armor. Current max 238.
The concept in which Buck was proposing as a counter to my "stock + 100 points" is "stock + # tons of armor = new max."
Say stock + 1 ton = new max.
128 stock armor + 1 ton standard armor (32 points) = 160.
128 stock armor + 1 ton set ferro (36 points per ton) = ( (4 + 1 ton = 32*5) + Ferro 4*5) is 180.

Jager A (most armored Jager). 256 stock armor. Current max, 422.
Stock + 1 ton = new max.
Stock (8 tons) + 1 ton standard armor (32 points per ton) = 288.
Stock (8 tons) + 1 ton made ferro armor (36 points per ton) = 324.

Atlas. Stock, 608. Current max 614.
Stock + 1 ton = new max.
Stock (19 tons) + 1 ton standard armor (32 points per ton) = 640.
Stock (19 tons) + 1 ton made ferro armor (36 points per ton) = 720.

I can definitely say it won't only be lights that benefit from that ferro concept. Even if you don't safe much weight at all, you get a fair benefit indeed.

Oh and random fun fact: The 4 UAC/5 Jagermech design that's floating around? Happens to use 192 armor (Jager S) and if you're lucky enough not to jam and use it at range, it's devastating and butchers enemies quite fast. But yeah, my concept was stock + 100 across the board so that armor was well above stock values but at an even number instead. (Interestingly the Spider would only gain 2 points of armor above its current max; yet the Urban mech would have enough to be reasonably viable even with an engine limit of 62 kph after elites.).

--------------------------

But anyway. Simply4Riot (the OP) did get his answers. While escorting some newer players into the field I happened to saw him on the opposing team. A kill, modest damage, can't recall the mech but it wasn't a trial.

I confess we did indeed get side tracked.

I have an idea; those interested in discussing the armor ideas more do let me know and I'll throw us all either into our own little thread or one of those annoying pop in your face forum message thingies!

Didn't you already have one of those going for it?
It's been a bit since anyone has added to it, but I am sure I remember you and someone I didn't recognize (not that that means much :D) discussing it...

TL:DR

If you liked the trial spider, get the Spider series and master the 5D and 5K. The 5V is a piece of **** though.

^This.

I'm branching out to the 5D and 5V.... I just bought the 5V.... I can tag on a bit more armor, but sacrifice any real offensive weaponry... carrying only 2MedPLas. While they can do average damage, to just be armed with 2 medium pulses is hard...
Especially since my 5K can dish out with 3xMachine Guns, a ML and an AC5.
