Was thinking of a new cheap desktop for father's day and my birthday which is also in June, since I play MWO with my son (pilot's name Lionscub) on a laptop that is running 10-20 fps, crashing all the time, having more and more problems handling the game. Seeing the posts I am thinking that building my own with my son might be a great father-son project. However I need to keep my costs low, in the $500 area, Possibly put together a basic system with a good cpu but add on a video card/RAM later so. Is this possible? Any thoughts/suggestions?

If you don't add a graphics card, you won't likely be able to play the game any better than you do now, but if you want a basic desktop until you can save up for a decent graphics card, but this would be a decent start;

Personally, I wouldn't cheap out on a mobo like that. Also, the power supply doesn't meat the minimum recommended wattage for the video card.
