Shadowhawk really should be the go-to mech for newbies these days: fairly cheap, relatively durable, jump capable and with access to all weapon types it can be built in many fashions allowing new players to try different things to find what feels right for them (or just cheese up into a meta, whatever.) From there they can probably figure out if they want to go lighter for speed or heavier for firepower.

I would go for a Medium Mech.
Lights are pretty easy to use in theyr basic mode; fast, manegeable, do not overheat because don't carry too much weapons.
But if you dont use them "correctly", they could be annoying: you cant expect to do too much kills or damage. And most of the new people like to enter the battelfield too fast.
Assoults are the opposite. The firepower is the most, but they are really slow, and a good mechwarrior in a light can easly destroy or damage an assoult mech far from his teammates.
What i suggest is a Medium Mech, upgraded with a hig-speed engine and medium range weapons. A Shadow Hawk is pretty good balanced and can be a tough enemy.

I'd recommend a Shadowhawk, a Hunchback, a Centurion, a Griffin, or a Quickdraw. Those are all relatively affordable (i.e. you MIGHT be able to afford another mech after outfitting it with your cadet bonus) and relatively scrappy.

I have been playing for a few months. I have mastered the Catapults and Shadowhawks. My friend, who had been playing since closed beta told me to get the Cat K2 http://mwo.smurfy-ne...d1cfd83eb43eb78 It worked great for me. I then bought the Jester, and a c4(bad plan get the c1) The jester is my best mech. The k2 has speed, while still having some armor for when you make a bad move. Its arms are high mounted so you can "hill hump" and take shots with the ppcs. As you learn the game you can make a gauss cat, put in ACs. It is one of the most XL friendly mechs, opening it up for even more load outs. Shadowhawks are solid, but for starting out my friend was right, K2

Why on Earth do people keep lumping "affordable" as the reason to buy a Hunchback?
For another 30 minutes grinding you can get a good 'mech. Less, if you have a good run. And then you won't be stuck grinding experience for hours on a 'mech you don't want to keep in the end.
EDIT: If you're thinking about a Cent, look at the Griffin instead. It just as tough with some advantages. It is superior to the Shadow Hawk for missile builds.

I started with an Assault (Stalker) which was... hard to learn, to say the least lol.
But my first MED after that was a Hunchback. HBK-4H. I'd say it was hard to learn too, but it's not a hard role once you learn it. Flank, hit, run, and escort. After piloting the hunchback to the point I can do 500 damage a match regularly, I've found I'm better at lights and assaults too. You basically have to learn awareness and positioning in the hunchy or you lose
Are you saying the hunchy isn't good? And that someone shouldn't play it because of that? New players should ignore this meta shit. I enjoy the hunchback the most out of all my mechs so far, and am usually in the top 5 on the team

Yeah, for some players, it's only about SHD, CTF and HGN (and some of the ECM mechs of course). Just ignore them.
I think if a new player starts out in a SHD, he will find every mech he buys next to be either too slow, clumsy, underarmed or frail.
In my opinion, a player should start with anything he thinks looks cool. There might be a few mechs that are not recommended, such as the LCT, COM, KTO, DRG, QKD, AWS and STK, because they have some limitations a new pilot will have troubles to deal with. But the rest of the mechs should work well for new players.

My friends just started to play this game and is wondering about what mech to buy as his 1st.
He want' something for med/close range with decent tankishness but I have neither knowledge nor experience to advice him.
He's new player so clearly something strong, not gimmicky and not crazy hard to use. Possibly not very expensive either since every new player wants to buy few mechs to test them etc.
What mechs would you guys suggest for the 1st mech keeping in mind all the things about engines, need of upgrades as well as reasonably good 2nd and 3rd mechs if he were to elite it.

Since Im fairly new I can give some newbie to newbie, a Heavy would be a good first mech. I would never recommend a Medium to a new player. I'd recommend a CLPT-C1 or a CTF-4x. Both are relatively cheap and give a new player a way to test multiple weapon platforms.
If he really wants to brawl, then the CTF would by my first choice.
