btw.. i'm grabing a STD335 for my atlas.. See all questions answered from the awesome folks here

Battlemasters come with the STD340, if you don't mind that extra little bit.
(though BM being an assault are rather expensive themselves....)

Well the problem with the XL280, and XL275 even though they are the same weight, some mechs can't hold the 280, I remember that issue when i bought it.. and found out right after..

Anywho... I decided.. Seeing i wan't the Jagers anyway, I will buy my 2 other ravens, and add double HS to um, and use the XL210, while i grind till i get enough money to buy the JMD-DD, thank you all for helping me... btw.. i'm grabing a STD335 for my atlas.. thanks!

Remember, XL 210 is slow as heck, so you may want to try for a slightly larger engine somehow from one mech or another you may be interested in. STD 340 as Shar said is also in Battlemasters.

The 4X is designed for quad AC5 so badly it hurts. It's an amazing 'mech with that 4x AC5 2x ML design and not so amazing with other configurations.. but man is it a beast when you're running the norm.

Buy standard engines in 25 increments -- ie STD 325 / 350. for your atlas. If I had to buy 1 which I could use for a lot of builds, it'd be the 325.

Get my atlas going,, this thing needs a bigger engine as the std 300 is just way to slow for me, Was wondering what people use for typical engines in the DDC, I was thinking like a 340? 350? Was thinking Lasers, an AC, and streaks with Bap/guardian any idea on what size engine is worth using in an atlas? Id like to stay away from an XL too.

If you like what you have, you don't need to really work on anything else, though I must tell you that there are a lot of fun 'mechs out there. The Thunderbolt is the toughest thing I own short of my Atlas - its ability to spread damage is simply insane, so it can brawl where the Dragon cannot. It's got good hardpoints for PPC sniping or brawling, and the speed to be quite versatile. In short the Thunderbolt is an excellent workhorse 'mech, and you would not be sorry to have bought it. But if you're having fun, keep on working on your current 'mechs and refining your builds. Mastering the 'mechs you enjoy playing is an excellent way to grind out more c-bills withoutthinking about it, and the module slot is well worth the time in its own right. You should not buy any new chassis until you have the money to buy at least Double Heat Sinks and Endo-Steel for it.

That being said, I do recommend that you master at least one of every class that you enjoy, and the Raven is an excellent light - its hit boxes spread damage very well, and the 3L in particular can carry fairly heavy anti-light armaments. The other variants are seldom used for a reason, however; they are much more difficult to build effectively, and are generally regarded as a chore to level up. The 3L is worth the effort, however, so if you've already got the Raven, level away.

The Atlas is another fun 'mech, but be warned that it requires patience and experience to use it will in random matches. You are correct that a 300-rated engine is too slow - not because of the max speed so much as the slow torso twist rate. You'll want a 325 engine at the slowest, and I'd recommend a 350 STD engine AC/20-SRM6 brawler build to level up - the Atlas' low weapon hardpoints, gigantic height, low number of missile tubes, and unavoidably slow speed makes it a poor long-range 'mech on the modern battlefield. Try an LRM boat, and my incandescent rage will light your computer on fire over the internet. =)

In essence, you've got two fun 'mechs already in your stable - drag them out and take them for a spin every so often, and you'll find the rewards worth the time.

PS: The Hunchback 4P is a bit different from the other hunchbacks, because it is so ungodly hot. I recommend the linked build, if you're interested in learning it - use the hunch/head and arms on separate weapon groups to avoid the heat scale penalties. Using a hide-and peek strategy in concert with a brawler or sniper on your team (preferably an assault) will allow you to use your amazing alpha (40-points is not bad, even with lasers) to punish people who are trying to flank your team while allowing you to cool down when needed by hiding behind the assault (just don't actually block his movement.)

At the same time there are sometimes other benefits to a slightly higher or lower engine.

IE the 280xl weighs the same as the 275xl - and I have found that, the Centurion (at least) takes a larger speed (turning speed I mean) boost from the 250-260 jump than for the 240-250 jump. (and an almost non-existent boost from 260-275 - land speed yes, turning, no)

So if you are not overly worried about cramming extra HS into your mech, I wouldn't worry to much about keeping to the 25 point increments to tightly. :)

well after playing with ravens last night i have come to the conclusion.... Why on earth did i ever try to run them with a XL210... I can't even out run a medium with that engine, and lights run circles around me.. but the 4x and 2x i have had trouble getting 100xp.. the 3L with a XL280 i do much better with.. but man those small engines just suck.. at least for me and my lack of light experience. I so wish i spent the money on the Jager instead, and grinded that and used my other mechs to get enough money to break into the ravens.. What a hard lesson.

He means 4X as in RVN-4X, the one light designed for heavy weapons.

It's to save money, you could also go for anything with a larger XL engine (let's say the Jager DD, you can get XL 260 which will work pretty well). There is a reason many don't prefer the RVN-2X and RVN-4X, they are a ton slower, and while you can go much faster, I suggest not to buy a separate engine unless you choose to get Shadow Hawk 5M or something like that. I did point out you'd be going much slower, so you may want to pick some heavier weapons and play like a medium with 2X and 4X.

An excerpt from a guide I'm working on:

RVN-2X: The first of the mishandled Raven brothers(or sisters), very underrated because it's top speed is 140Kph which is somewhat low for a light, However, it is an excellent escort mech, one build used on it with great success(not by me) is max XL engine, 4MLs, 1SRM6(with 3 tons ammo) ,AMS(with 2 tons ammo) it is a great escort mech, and in the midst of the fray will be overlooked by the bigger mechs.

c-RVN-4X: The second mishandled sibling, possibly the best satellite out of all the lights. I have seen this thing running around with 2xAC2s, AC5, UAC5, LB10X. with an XL250 and max armor, plus a medium laser or two, this thing will pack a wallop and add great firepower to whichever mech it was satelliting. I have seen a 4PPC stalker being hunted by an enemy JMS under 90Ms survive because the stalker kept twisting to spread damage and the raven was causing so much damage to the JMS that it switched to chase it. Which gave the stalker enough time and distance for a 91 Meter alpha into the rear CT of the JMS. This mech is also a very good escort.

Don't play the 2x and 4x in a traditional light mech role. They are going to be handicapped there. Instead rely on their strengths: Good maneuverability, okay speed, high firepower, and very good armor for a light.

I recommend using both in the satellite/escort roles. Where you can abuse your maneuverability and torso twist to add extra damage to someone already being hit by a bigger mech (so they think it's a bigger threat than your raven)

Also, try not to use consumable modules as much. Don't get trigger happy with the artys and airstrikes. I would also add that you should slap a Target Info Gathering module on them. Will help a bit.
