No icons, you'd need to implement something so each side had identifiable coloring- invasion stripes, yellow heads, red torsos etc.
Random TOD, all maps, be interesting to see Alpine at night, Manifold high noon (or whatever equivalent planet wise)

1. As the teams are random, this would make personal camo-choices useless.
2. Do military-planes identify each other with colours-of-arms? Why would you think this would work when running at 100kph while shooting around and being shot at? So, the successor-states have Battlemechs but they no longer have the technology to build a short-range IFF radio-network?

1. The current IFF works just fine, and like DI3T3R said we gots to have our personalized camos! Of course if you join a merc unit/clan they usually run a similar color scheme within the team in 12 man drops so this gets the effect.
2. Dynamic time of day would be amazing!

Actually, I'm of the belief that if they implemented new Icons for the Identification: Friend or Foe, such as newer icons similar to the ones used in World of Tanks. Only instead of Diamond shaped icons, I would love to see Square and not Arrows.
As follows:
Solid Square: Light `Mech
Two Rectangles: Medium `Mech
Three Rectangles: Heavy `Mech
Four Rectangles: Assault `Mech
Champion `Mech: would follow the same pattern, only with a different Color, say gold or red
Hero, also the same as Champion, but with a greenish or blueish color type.

1) you think an overlay would be impossible?
2) ah.....yes. WWII an outstanding example of that, kept ground forces from shooting at unfamiliar aircraft.
this was a big worry with other combat sim games, guess what? everyone who CHOSE that mode of combat learned the ropes quickly. Obviously many who rely on spray and pray to hit something couldn't handle much more complex game.
hey, I get it, you are one of those that couldn't handle the game without giant red or blue icons over a mech.
spare me the chatter about IFF radio, how technologically advanced would a MIRROR clamped outside the window be?
