My tip to the OP is this:

Stay mobile; maximize the effect of the Victor's one clear advantage over all other assaults.

I only own the VTR-DS, and haven't piloted it very much, but the one thing I've observed - and taken advantage of - vs other VTR pilots is their tendency to sit still and try to line up shots.

Yes, you're in an assault and you can soak up some damage, but you're in the most fragile assault and your best defense is to stay mobile.

Get used to "looping" to take your shots... don't fall into the same walk-forward/walk-backward trap that so many assault pilots do. Loop wide left or right out of cover, take your shot, twist your legs around in a turn and get back into cover at top speed.
Use the same technique up hills, shoot over the peak and loop down to the side, always at top speed.

Never hang out over a hill or around a corner... the Vic's upper torso is SUCH an easy target to abuse.

Yes, your accuracy will suffer at first, but you'll be learning & reinforcing some invaluable skills right away and you won't have to unlearn bad habits later.
