Things I learned while Mastering a locust (while maintaining a positive KDR):

1) Explosions are pretty fun to watch. Often times, it'll be your own mech, but still.
2) UAV and Artillery strike are good for ~80 damage and 1-2k exp.
3) You are an objective driven mech. NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER click 'any' or 'skirmish'.
4) LIFO - Be last to the fight, and the first one out of combat. Avoid all combat that might hold you longer than .5-1.5 seconds, except near the end of the match.
5) 170kph is a must have. It is literally a night and day difference on this mech, even more so than on my DK. Survivability boosts 50% or more.
6) Locust swarms are not impressive.
7) If you see 'LBX', 'Machine gun', or streaks - run. These weapons chew you to pieces.
8) If you are suddenly dead, it's because of PPCs or autocannons, there will be literally no time to see said weapons.
9) EVERY SINGLE TRICK MATTERS in building these mechs. 2 points of rear armor with the rest put in front? Check. Maximum armor? Check. Double AMS if avail? Check. Maximum engine speed plus ferro AND endo? Triple check.
10) When in doubt, put an ER large laser on the torso, at least then you can fire from long range and MAYBE not get instagibbed in the return fire.
11) The 1V is a fantastic pain in the rear armor for end of the round cleanup. Once the enemy is down to 4-5 mechs, run in and start gunning down every component in sight with your machine guns.
12) Locusts scream "easy kill" to any player with eyes. So don't stand where they can see you.
13) Water is a great shield for locusts -
14) Even with double XP bonus, UAV, premium, AND a double XP weekend.. it's still not easy.
15) Never stop moving. When you can get legged/gibbed by 20 damage the last thing you want to do is present an easy target.
16) Slow down when going over ridges. You will break your legs, which are already fragile enough.
17) Whiskey eases the pain.

Responses:

1. Yea, especially since the Locusts explodes spectacularly, often summer-saulting across the ground.
2. I need to equip those
3. I still run "Any", but if it isn't objective based, I try to be a ninja and get behind the enemy and strike from behind.
4. Yea, I allow my team to engage and then try and sneak in and do damage un-seen. If spotted, I GTFO.
5. Think mine is 150+ something. Still, I wouldn't want to be slower than 150.
6. Not by themselves, often need a Jenner or Firestarter in there too. Maybe if everyone had MLaser boat 3Ms.
7. Yea...just yea. Maybe streaks more than the LBX as long as you stay quick and mobile...but still...yea.
8. Nothing like running full bore and then...Dead. Hey, stuff happens, what can ya do.
9. Tricks are fun. In Terra, the CT laser will go between the stacked crates inside the volcano. It's like shooting out a porthole LOL.
10 & 11.. I run the 1V as a sniper (1ERLaser), but it does still have 2MGs. It might pull that cleanup idea off depending on how baddly damaged they are.
12. Yes, be all ninja. Move in the shadows and never stray too far from good cover if it can be helped.
13. LOL, yea. It is definently a sub
14. Nope, but that is part of the fun. Live for the good matches, even if they are hard to come by.
15. Good advice for any light mech really
16. Yea, I think Tiny Tim had stronger legs than a Locust.
17. Probably helps your piloting become more erratic too...double bonus :)

I for one was really surprised how going from an XL190 with 152 or so KPH to 169 was such a night and day difference (before/after speed tweak). It really matters that much, though I certainly thought about putting tonnage from a lighter engine into bigger guns. Then I realized that meant more fighting, which the locust can't do.
