CLG - Combat Loss Groupings

CLG is a term to describe the acceleration of losses on a battlefield. As a mech proceeds through a battle it acquires damage over time. The group acquires damage(roughly) at the same rate and spread as an individual mech. Basically, as the battle proceeds, damage will distribute throughout the team. Weapon systems will be knocked out, armor will be depleted, and mechs will be lost. CLG describes the overall affect on the team as these systems, equipment, and mechs are destroyed. As you proceed, a mech will be lost, allowing the enemy to concentrate their fire slightly. This accelerates the rate at which your team acquires damage. As mechs are destroyed, the fire is concentrated even higher on the remaining mechs. The rate at which mechs are destroyed increases with each loss. Many times, several mechs will be taken out almost simultaneously. This effect can be devastating.

CLG causes many stomps on MWO. This is exaggerated by the lack of tonnage balancing. Very often, in my experience, a stomp will occur because one team significantly out-weighs the other. This means the weighted team masses more overall firepower that can be concentrated on the enemy. This allows them to easily inflict more damage, thereby accelerating the rate of CLG. Also, this is the reason why light swarms seem to do well, but fall apart. Unless the light pilots are very good, they will fail due to being unable to concentrate sufficient firepower. Often, I see teams of lights pitted against teams of assaults. That means the lighter teams pilots must be exceptional compared to the assault team in order to win(or that the assault pilots be total newbies). That is rarely the case.

This affects PUG matches far more than it could possibly affect 12 man groups. Most 12 mans would be using comms, increasing their ability to communicate, thereby giving them more control over what is happening and better ability to deal with it. In PUG matches, where only part of your group *might* be on comms, this is much, much harder to deal with.

That is why we need tonnage limits, or tonnage matching. IMO, this would be far more effective than even ELO ratings. This could also be a good reason for getting voice comms in-game.

Edit: Clarification of title.

.....which has been addressed, argued about, beaten to a pulp and could be resolved by using Battle Value instead (or in addition to) this while Elo thing.

Good luck, keep up the fire.
