Today I saw this while stalking my favorite developer.

We turned off the traces for arty and airstrike because they just look better without them. They are actually launched at an angle coming from the direction of your base towards the center of the map and not straight down. That may be what you are experiencing.

So what happens when on Skirmish with no base? Do they instead come from one of the points of origin (Spawns)?

I agree, but there's a minor issue with that. Akin to mortar strikes in BF3 and artillery vehicles in World of Tanks, it opens some nasty possibilities too. However that's if you can spam them. Since we cannot, it seems reasonable.
I personally envisioned the mech launching a signal grenade (high skill base) and then a very high firepower multiple Long-Tom strike would come in.
Or in the case of airstrike, being able to launch something like MW2's "TAG" pod (akin to a NARC) into a target and then the airstrike consisting of an aerotech fighter flying by with the heavy missiles like Arrow IV with homing ammunition or saturation ammunition. Since Arrow IV Homing missiles are guided by TAG lasers, ECM has no effect on them. Leaving the enemy's only chance is to break line of sight from the TAG-using Airstrike caller before it's too late.
Here's to hoping we get mech mortars.

What's great is "limited guidance."

And not shot down by AMS.

The number of times I've seen one clearing the horizon towards me and bricked it...
"Move! Move! Incomiiiinnnnggg!"
I RP pretty hard on comms. Hilarity usually ensues.

You should hear the enemy team laugh at me when I kick the canopy off my cockpit, clamber out of the smoking ruin that used to be my 'mech, and blaze away with my holdout .38 Special, screaming, "WHAT - YOU THOUGHT THAT WOULD END ME?" as I go crit-hunting on ammo bins.

I sometimes see that fighter pass 5 or 6 times a match, and I wish I could shoot it down!
Note to new players: I'm pretty sure we can't.

You can't. The very day we got Jagers I asked in the AtD: Bryan: Paraphrased from memory. "Right now the airstrike isn't powerful enough to warrent such a mechanic. If the airstrike or another consumable of the same style becomes powerful enough we may introduce a skill-based mechanic like that."
But damn do I try to shoot it down anyway; it's so much fun!
