I've been meaning to write this up but time has unfortunately not permitted. I hope that the ones that were on my team in this match get the opportunity to read this; I was so proud.
We loaded into River City on the lower side; I was running with three of my unit mates. Duirng the ready screen we had one person that never connected. Then during the "mech power up sequence two more DCed. Three down and we hadn't even moved yet. It started out as one of those games that make you say, "well, ****."
My lance started on the right and pushed onto the upper deck where the airship parks, hoping to get an early game advantage for our team. No such luck. I asked the team if they had any thoughts. Their reply: "Take command."
So I took command and ordered overy into the city next to the cathedral to form a firing line. "Firing line, guys. Make them come to us." It was certainly one of the best firing lines I've seen set up in a PUG match given the limited prep time we had.
We had just set up the firing line when the first of enemy team came from the back side of the cathedral into the firing line of every member of my team. I really don't remember what he was in; he died too fast. Then another, and another. It was easy going for the first couple of enemies before they wised up and started pushing as a group.
"Hold the line, guys. Just keep shooting."
And so they did. Our line did not budge and did not waiver, save for a lone light who I couldn't blame for moving about with all the big guns going off. Somewhere in an amongst that chaos we did lose someone to enemy fire.
We won a fight of 9vs12 only losing 1 man. When the last enemy went down the team broke out with "Great job, Commander," "Awesome Commander," and "Best Commander!" And as much as I would love to stroke my own tactical ego, the commands that I gave only set the team up for a victory (I also believe there was a fair amount of alchohol sonsumed). It was everyone's victory as not one pilot backed down, waivered, or second guessed what they were doing. It was an absolute honor to have served that match with those pilots and I hope to see many of them in the future.
And though we lost a pilot in all that action, if he reads this I want him to know that no one looked at him as the team failure or as anything less than the brave and skilled pilot that he was. Any one of us could have died that match; it was a match we were almost pre-determined to lose. It was the efforts of every pilot in that match that brought victory. I was so proud of every member of my team that night.
Play Victoriously!
