The 5 MLas is good, but a bit hot. Try swapping a few of those medium lasers for small pulse lasers. They do less damage and have shorter range, but they have a much shorter beam duration and land more damage on the target. They also generate less heat and is a bit more managable, but it's a matter of preference. You can also drop the small pulses to small to fit on more AMS or heat sinks.
All in all, the locust is a challenging but super fun ride once you get the hang of it.

As for the 1V, you really need to be an opportunist and help finish off enemies that your teammates have damaged with your MGs.

yup. Basically, I find being a coward, and hiding the first few minutes, then zipping in with all 4 MGs blazing is the path to success..... unless you find 3 other people nutty enough to bomb Locusts with you. LOLcust lances are one of the best ways to blow off steam after a day of being MetaRaped.
My preferred 3M build though, uses 4 small lasers, and an ER Large. Stay way back, hide, snipe, move, wash, rinse and repeat. Then after mechs starts showing weak spots, is the time to start making ninja dashes to rake them with the small lasers. (Of course, my FS9-S does this even better with 6 small lasers and JJs, but it also gets noticed easier.)
the S...well, IDK... I have a lot of fun in my 2x LRM5 and Mlaser one.

Not cowardice when you play smart.

First up it's not a scout, no mech without ECM is. It only has 71 points of FF armour (Locust at full armour is killed quickly anyway so why waste tonnage) a 190XL engine (169.3km/h speedtweeked), Endo steel frame, and 2 tons of ammo (150 shots only but enough for most matches).
I'll average around 150 dmg a match, with a few 200 -300 dmg (ammo explosions helped) much better than I used to get with a 4MG ML build (less than 100 dmg most times).
Just wait for the brawls to start or rush round behind the enemy lines. Ignore other lights and just pound the big mechs, the constant AC-2 damage will make them take notice which can leave them vulnerable to your team while you rush away to a new firing position.

Looking forward to getting more once I'm done mastering my Catapults.

LCT-3M
LCT-3S
These are what I run on mine, and they're all surprisingly effective. They key to using any of them is patience; you must wait until the right time before you enter the fray, since you're simply too fragile to go in early and if you go in late you are the only target.

since that is actually my 50 ton "Cricket" designed to look just like the Locust, but be far more dangerous. At only about 12 larger a silhouette (thanks to hard engineering work and 16 tons of the additional mass being in the RACs), it can pull off a most successful ruse de guerre.

Ah, yes. the 'metagame'. We have dismissed those claims
