So I made this one because I have a large amount of mechs (mostly lights and mediums) but I don't have a single missle boat. I want to try this Orion out here but am not too sure how it will work out or if anything needs to be changed.

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...a0dda92f0b25bda

Now before I make it I want to know if anything should be changed so I won't go wasting some c-bills on this build. As i have the mech already my only other option I have for a missle boat is the Battlemaster-1S but i have mastered that already and am working on getting all elites unlocked for this Orion.

Also any advice would be greatly appreciated as I have not really played missle boats.

Edit: Less ammo and bigger engine needed. Thanks Lunatech and Jerrad.

Edit 2: Is BAP needed? Plus someone suggested removing tag. Good or bad idea?

Edit3: Newer version of build.

O.o that's a lot of ammo.

I'd say that 1600ish missiles is more than enough. For an LRM30 mech it seems that 1080 missiles is pretty much bang on. Could do with another ton for some of the longer matches, but they are rare.

Try dropping some ammo in favour of a larger engine:
This is, IIRC, my old -VA missile boat build.

Also something to consider, a single Medium Pulse Laser will absolutely not deter lights unless they are already beat to hell. Maybe drop that for more ammo/heatsinks.

I would suggest pulling out one of your LRM 10’s and bump up your engine size.

You need more speed to maneuver safely if you are going to hang around in the backfield and hope to not get picked off by a light. I would also look at bumping that medium laser up to a large so you might actually be able to help push off the lights that will come after you and the fatlases and stalkers in the backfield.

And that’s a lot of LRM ammo, you could probably shave 2 ton’s off and never run out. edit: Lunatech is bang on

When I was using my VA with LRMs I juggled between a 325 standard and a XL340. A 255XL with that much ammo strapped to it is essentially walking firestarter food. I tended to favor a pair of ArtLRM15s backed with either two ERLL or a ERLL and TAG.Also for awhile I was having fun with AC20/4SSRM2 and a 325std.

I sold all my Orion's because they pale in comparison to the Protector. Now you make me want them all back

I only sold my ON1-K but yeah, Protector (Iv named it Greed) keeps me pretty busy in the heavy class though I still have my VA collecting some dust.

This is essentially the build i have with it currently. I do like being close range but I want to try out the LRM game a bit. I can always switch it back afterwards if I hate any build I make.

Despite what everyone says about Medium LRM Skirmishers being the best for boating, I found the Onion's to be supreme LRM boats. Not so slow that you can't get your own locks/run back to the team, and not so fragile that a misstep into an AC20/2xPPC VTR or HGN ends your game.

My best success LRM'ing was actually in the -VA I posted, swapping out the MPulse for another Heatsink and ton of ammo IIRC.

Good luck, and I hope to see you on my team at some point. I know how dangerous those things can be

Huh, the -K was my last one to Master (I have a thing about eliting/mastering all mechs of a chassis I buy, eventually) and, despite early thoughts, it turned out to be my second best Orion. Obviously the Protector trumped it, but putting an ERPPC in the LT and an AC20 in the RT pretty much renders any other Orion brawler irrelevant.

Damnit. I'm saving to rebuy all the Trebs I sold (I should stop selling mechs I like, to buy new chassis' I have no idea about) but now I'm sorely tempted to pick up these behemoths again. It would be nice if they had the damage reduction of the Stalker/Atlas when the enemy tries to shoot through a destroyed ST, but that would make them obscenely OP.

Remove the LRM 10's for LRM 5's.

bump the engine up to a 300 XL.

Add BAP and AMS.

You still have 1980 LRMs to have fun with.

Also increase the number of DHS.

The problem with that build is ghost heat - and that it's too slow. If you put in an XL 300 and get up ove 70kph - you can avoid a lot of trouble.

Also - a LRM boat slower than 90kph or so (ie - not a LRMisher) - really needs more backup weapons.

Personally - I think the M backs a better missile boat. You can get up to LRM 40 with tag, put in an XL 300 - and have the hardpoints / tonnage for a couple of large lasers on an arm to make lights think twice. (amazing how many lights back off from the LLs - considering they could still take me up close)

You are going to need something for CQC. Orions are slow, big targets with CT's that are easily hit.
BAP is also very important.

I'd try something like this
ON1-M
but Orions arent suppose to be LRM's boats

Here is what I would do with your VA
ON1-VA
Swap out the ac20 for a 10 if you want but Orions are support brawlers.

in my orion V, i run a xl320 with 3 Alrm15s with 9t ammo and it works fantastic. i would recommend you drop the tag, run a pair of medium lasers, run a larger engine and drop to 4 lrm 10s. BAP is not "nice to have" its MANDATORY in a LRM boat. For ammo, 9-10 tons should cover you for pretty much every match, its real rare i run out with 9.

That is my current build I am trying for something new. Other people have advised me on getting a bigger engine which will be done for the missle boat version.

Many people say that missle boats need tag unless they have a teamate tag for them. As I would mostly pug (friends that I play with are in different time zones) would tag be good or bad on it?

Mah baby: AC10+2xLL+4xLRM5, AMS, XL300, Endo Steel. Cool enough to sustain fire even on hot maps. The not so little LRM mech that could.

Yes putting in XL 300 in exchange for ammo. For ghost heat I would be doing two lanchers at a time or chain firing the 4 of them. Also am considering downgrading to lrm 5s to avoid ghost heat

What i ran. I dont use tag because i have target decay. and i dont need that much ammo.
It was pretty damn good. And it only mounts 10 less lurms.

EDIT:
Now run this: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...a33a8416b4db3bf

How are you guys not getting wrecked by lights? That was my only issue running the Orions. I'd be fighting off lights with my 2ml's then I'd get cored......

3 tons of LRM ammo? Not NEARLY enough.

LRM mech without tag? Ugh!

Try something like this for an M LRM boat - http://mwo.smurfy-ne...2123ba55c817234 - I've done quite well with it.

Arm lasers are your bread and butter against lights unless your packing SSRMs, I find a 325+ engine with at least full elite lets me give grief to the most nimble of lights.

Not hanging 500m behind the pack seems to work. You have the armour to deal with a few frontal hits. Use the foremost Atlai as shields, sneak out from behind them to Tag and fire your LRM's then retreat behind them as and when you get targetting. The medium mechs that should be milling around the edges of your battleline are your friends. They're the ones who fight off lights.
