The second link in my signature presents a system designed to remedy exactly this problem.

that system is a pipe dream though. Its not something reasonably within PGI's ability.

if engine size was in any way consistent that might make sense. But engine sizes are all over the place so that wouldnt really work. for example a cataphract 4x with its tiny 255 engine would have better stealth than a jenner.

it makes far more sense to base it off of tonnage.

The larger mech might be easier to see with the old Mark 1 Eyeball, but for locking on maybe it's the engine size that matters most?

From a balance perspective, isn't a Jenner with a 300 engine more of a threat than a CTF that's actually using a stock 255 engine? If one of the two was going to get a stealth bonus I'd prefer it not be the tricked out Jenner.

I'd rather PGI actually properly balance the mechs and variants outright, but... that's like asking too much of PGI...

I smell a lot of sore assault pilots in this thread who do not know how to deal with lights.
Clue... "It's in the legs.. !"

IMO they dont even have to balance every variant. Every mech should just have at least one variant thats competitive.

Funnily enough the only reason I bought light mechs (yay, Commando's) is to hunt other light mechs, so for me it's a self sustaining prophesy. If there are light mechs then I will drive a light mech, if there are no light mechs I won't have fun and won't drive a light mech.

I will probably have epic amounts of fun when the NARC is made worthwhile as a spotting tool because then I can run a scout role without having to waste copious amounts of c-bills on UAV's and Artillery, but until then the only reason I drive a light is to duel other lights a and zoom around really fast.

Thomas could implement it in his sleep.

For Christ's sake, the thread tells exactly how to implement it. There isn't any complexity involved.

I implemented it in a Google spreadsheet in a few hours, and that included manually entering in all the seed data. While drinking tequila.

Maybe if you post a picture of a cat, I'll show you exactly what it looked like through a dramatic artists rendering!

Nah, it ain´t beyond PGI to implement Rolands "effing easy system of self-adjusting" and you know it, mates ...

Roland with his system of "Auto-balance" is very much spot-on .
Not much need discussing and t rying to poke holes into it after reading through it, trust the "never-satisfied" immersion/realism ***** in me, otherwise I´ll just have to hop in my digital A10-C and give you guys some Gau-8 massages ( and if that ain´t helpin I stll got someAGM65-D waiting for your Mechs)^^

I play lights a lot, really a big reason many people do not run a variety of mechs is because they think the profile stats mean something.

Well it is more then I originally thought. Though I think 1 fight is a little light to make such a blanket statement. They post ping times for the folks involved? I will readily admit that high ping lights are pretty lame.
I will first say I have mastered every light..I like th em buti know they dont register. All you have to do is jump in a dual gauss jag for a few matches. Only half the shots will reg. Lasers have no problem but who knows how much dmg theyre really doing.

I would love to see them fix this problem and I would like to see these target boxes removed. Red box popping up 600m away hinding in a forest isnt right.

Raven-3L and Spider-5D made me dislike the game more than Highlander-732 ever did, in their respectful primes. Partly it was due to ECM, and partly because they were abusing the shit outta the hit registration.

There is no urgent need for any light love. Mediums on the other hand...

Well, some lights certainly do need some love. The "other" Ravens are crap, Locusts are absolutely horrid, and Commandos fare little better.

I would love to see other Ravens getting bigger engines, but there is just no reason to bring non-ECM Raven (especially 2X) into the fight, even with the engine upgrade. Hardpoint changes can make them better, but people might cry about lore-breaking. Same deal with Commandos. Hardpoints are similar in size but that ECM on the 2D is a game changer.

Locusts are meant to be horrid--there is only so much you can do with a 20 ton mech. I guess Locusts are for those who wanna be the best pilot of the worst mech, for bragging rights. Perhaps one could try to use its better than usual arm angles for high angle shots...

Locusts can be so much better if PGI don't adhere so strictly to the CBT mech construction rules. Why does every mech need at least 10 heat sinks? Why does the Locust need more internal strength and max armor in its head than in any of its arms, legs, or side torsos?

To be fair, being able to launch with fewer than 10 sinks wouldn't help the 3M Locust at all (because it runs hot enough to need all 10). IMO my preferred solution would be to make all 10 base sinks integrated into the engine, regardless of engine rating. This would free up a lot of critical slots on lights under 30 tons, and would help them make more use of Ferro + Endo at the same time. Most notable is that the 3SSRM2 Trollmando 2D would no longer need to use SHS (or downgrade the ML to an SL) to put in an extra ton of Streak ammo.

Also, being able to put 20 armor on a Locust's leg would be nice as well, but the TT developers decided that 20 ton mechs shouldn't have the same leg/torso armor proportion as heavier weight mechs...

I believe they do to an extent. If there's a mech comparison to be made, and it fails the "it's meh" test, well, it needs to be reworked.

Let's start with the easy stuff:
Raven-2X (because Jenner-K)
Raven-4X (because Firestarter-H)
Spider-5V (a class of fail of its own)
Locust-3S (does anyone take 4 SRM2s seriously?)
Stalker-4N (does it serve a purpose?)
Atlas-K (joke Atlas)
And the list goes on (if I even bother to think hard, I could list every fail)...
