Since it appears to be using ActiveX 9, it should be much of an jump to create an OPENGL client.

Anyway, a linux port would be sweet.

A native Linux MWO client would be nice, but I'd rather PGI stay focused on the development of the game itself rather than spend time porting it to another platform.
There is also the issue of Micro$oft owning the rights to the Mechwarrior name. I just don't see this game supporting anything other than DirectX.

First, the claim/implication that any significant percentage of personal computers are running Linux users is not strictly true. Data regarding usage share of operating systems is readily available, and shows that, as of May 2014, Linux machines constitute roughly 1.62% of PCs; the next least-used OS, Windows Vista, represents 2.90% of PCs (nearly double that of Linux).
Secondly, PGI's specific sub-license to the MechWarrior franchise does not extend to non-Microsoft platforms (a restriction put in place by Microsoft, who is still the ultimate license holder for the MechWarrior video games); listen to Byran Ekman (PGI Creative Director and Co-Founder) explain the rights situation in the "No Guts, No Galaxy" podcast #44 (starting at the 25:24 mark).
Moreover, a later statement in the same podcast (starting at the 26:07) indicates that, in contrast to PGI, Personae Studios (producing MechWarrior Tactical Command) does have rights to produce MW products for non-MS platforms but does not have rights to produce MW products for MS platforms.
Between a miniscule user base & legal restrictions put in place by the license holder, it is highly unlikely that there would ever be a PGI-made "port" of MWO for non-Microsoft platforms.

Btw Ubuntu Linux alone has 20,000,000 users world wide and I vaguely remember hearing about some countries doing away with windows, but that was a while ago.
Since I acknowledge that it is mostly a licensing issue at this point I have to admit curiosity towards the license price tag. If PGI owned the all that is mechwarrior they would have far more freedom to develope. Instead of just a restictive license. If I had a parallel platform / shadow copy capable compiler for them I'd be sending them a copy to use.
Of course something like that would be rather advance for what is out there at this point anyway. I don't know of any compilers that could write code in the background for the other available gaming platforms that you aren't typing code for. Dang I dream big. lol I could add more, but I'll save that for another time.
I almost forgot. Many of the linux distro's out there are based off of Slackware, Debian, Fudora and probably Redhat so developing for those distrobutions would likely cover the compatiblitly issue for most of the distro's in use dispite many of them having their own unique features. My apologies if I missed one, but the point is you wouldn't have to develop for every distro out there just the base ones.

I have to admit I'm curious as to how much it would cost PGI to just buy Mechwarrior from Microsoft. That would ultimately solve licensing issues. Also as far as I know Microsoft wasn't/isn't totally convinced that the title can be revived completely anyway. So if they have their doubts about it why keep it?
I don't recall many games that just did the job surviving anyway. If the potential is being held back then that is the kind of destiny this game could be headed for. At least it isn't totally feeling like a pay to win game.
