So Hawken just became free on Steam, and I decided to try out how my years of experience in REAL 'mechs would transfer to these little metal boxes. I started from Lvl 1 with the skimpy CRT on legs, and three matches into the game I was doing like this...
...this...
...and this.
Bleh.
So I was right. Hawken was pretty meh on launch and is still very meh now.
And the whole game just feels...wimpy. Mostly due to the sound design. Every thing sounds so wimpy and weak! Even Titanfall's titans have MUCH better sound effects that make your mech feel significant. I kind of feel like Titanfall would be the end of Hawken. In comparison, everything in MWO sounds "AWE YEEEEEEEEAH!!!!!!" Kudos to MWO sound team.

Hawken and Titanfall are totally different games. They are MEANT to be arcade FPS shooters.
MechWarrior is MEANT to be a futuristic tactical warfare simulator, so, speaking about game concepts, it doesn't make sense to compare those 2 games with MW. It's like to compare Call of Duty with ArmA. They are totally different games, and both are good.
Actually I can understand people who do that, because MWO is actually an arcade shooter too, but that's because PGI has monkeys instead of developers and IGP is an evil publisher
Both Titanfall and Hawken are technically good actually. They are pretty funny games, devs are good and have good ideas (titanfall ones have more money because of big publisher ). And netcode works well
If you don't understand what I mean, then you should try previous MechWarrior games

The thing I really hate about Hawken isn't the game itself. It does what it wants pretty well but not fun for me.
It is their community that while is not as toxic is pretty ignorant. Hawken went free to play on steam and it appeared on /r/games as a self post. The comments against MWO are horrifying. These Hawken fans were obviously once MWO fans that jumped the boat. Ofc they are using outdated information because they haven't played in a year so they just go on about PGI is evil without any real substance to their arguments.
Hurr Duur PGI evil, stopped MWLL.
We had a post about it, explaining it. PGI didn't stop a damn thing.
Game is dying!
Actually using the forums as an active count as of noon time EST MWO has about 900 guests and members browsing.
Hawken has about 400 guests and members post Steam Integration.
etc.
Also I invalidate everything you will ever say on these forums because you need to resort to insulting the developers by calling them monkeys. The point you need to use insults in any form of criticism invalidates most of it unless a person actually presents a good idea. Sadly you did not.

Cut off with that "MEANT TO BE DIFFERENT HURR DURR" argument (of course they're f**king different, why would they exist otherwise). I'm talking about the production value that went into the games. Titanfall is obviously well-spiced because, you know, Vince Zampella and EA. But Hawken got three times the money during the "founder" period than MWO, and they clearly didn't put nearly as much effort into it, but instead went for some live-action bullsh*t that never came out.
And the sound design. Yes I'm a little obsessed with sound designing, because it's the most important thing that connects the player with the gameplay world. MWO went through at least two total rework on weapon sounds, and it definitely helped.

Sound is way more important than people realize in things like games and movies. Immersion for humans is way more tied to our sense of hearing than it is our sense of vision. Well designed (artistically) sound with solid (technical) quality can literally save an otherwise unwatchable low budget movie, and part of the reason so many low budget movies are painful to watch is due to poor sound quality and zero thought given to sound design.
By extension, the same can be sad for video games. One with amazing an amazing sound design with strong technical execution is just going to draw us more into it psychologically. We are tuned to sound in a way that (barring absolute deafness - and even then the body can feel the sensation of sounds of certain frequencies or volume) we simply cannot ignore it. We can refuse to touch or taste something, we can close our eyes and not look at something, we can prevent ourselves from smelling something - but in plugging our ears we cannot fully shut out sound.
The only way to eliminate sound in our lives is to sit in a truly silent anechoic chamber, at which point we start hearing the minuscule sounds of our own body and our sanity rapidly deteriorates.
Sound design in media is important. It's my biggest complaint with the Gran Turismo series. They could easily have awesome, realistic sounds for every single car and they don't. A small few of the "detailed" cars in 6 sound awesome, but the rest sound like vacuum cleaners, as they always have.

Titanfall looks good and i would like to try it, never played Hawken so i might try that out as well
But i believe one of the Titans is called "Atlas"...WTF....Respawn better lawyer up cause i believe Wizkids as the copyright to mechs and their names. Of course FASA got sued for mechwarrior a while back as well

They own the design, not the name. I could make a video game with a mech in it called the Atlas but if it didn't look anything like Battletech's Atlas I doubt I'd have legal issues on my hands.
I tried Hawken, I personally thought the design was awesome. A little too CoD-like for me (if I want Call of Duty I'll play Call of Duty), but still a quality game overall.
