Cataphract may be the initian brain child of the Capellans, however, no Phract at that time was in service at the beginning of their production until the Federation captured most of the stock piles and manufacturing senters for the mech. So even though the Phract may be first built by the Caps it was in fact first fielded by the Feds. Also, the Phract 4X and 3D were Fed variants.

I love how Davions try to twist history in their favor. :P
From Sarna:

Quote

The Cataphract is a heavy BattleMech and one of the first original designs since the start of the Succession Wars, though it had inauspicious beginnings. Desperate for a heavy 'Mech design that their ailing infrastructure could sustainably produce and maintain, the Capellan Confederation designed the Cataphract to be assembled from parts they could still manufacture. Dubbed a FrankenMech for its appearance,[4] for using components from the Marauder, Shadow Hawk and Phoenix Hawk,[citation needed] the Cataphract was set to become the Confederation's new standard heavy 'Mech. It entered line service just before the Fourth Succession War. During this war the production line on Tikonov fell to the Federated Suns. This embarrassing was further compounded as many Davion units, including the Crucis Lancers, adopted the Cataphract as their own. However, the product quality from Tikonov left the Federated Suns wanting (at least in part to deliberate obstruction by workers still loyal to the Confederation[5]).
It was not until 3032 that the Confederation finally replaced the lost factory with one on Betelgeuse, producing their own Cataphracts in time for the Andurien Crisis.

There is one mech in game (both table top and in MWO) that no medium mech fills

That of the Phoenix hawk.

A heavily armored, very fast, jump capable 45 ton mech with a few energy and ballistic hardpoints

I really wish they would create their own mech name it something coo like "Obsidian Crow" and basically make the Phoenix Hawk. Because both in table top and MWO it is a very needed role.

And give it ECM because I am sick and tired of the same 5 mechs to stand a chance in today's missile swarms.

Not 45 tons, but the Chameleon fits the bill well enough. Same speed and jump capability, capable of sporting slightly more armor, equal or better firepower.

As a point of clarification/correction: the VND-1X actually carries two Machine Guns in it's Left Arm (along with a half-ton of MG ammo and a full set of actuators). :P

That'd be at least 2B + 2E in the arms, then, and gives you potential for twin AC/2 or AC/5 with full arm mobility. A plus in it's favor.

While it'd be a nice option to replace the Phoenix Hawk, there's only one production model as of 3051. Non-starter.

Name your source, plz? Just checked NGNG and there's nothing on it. . . YET!

Regarding the Hatchetman, Paul was -joking-, as you actually managed to quote and not notice.

laughed at the idea of Hatchetman in a good way. :P Just too fun to be true. Hatchets, Artillery are too complicated for PGI to implement them...

Yes, it often is! And I do understand why the Davions desperatly try to claim that mech for their own. Their engineers aren't capable of coming up with such a, in a pure technical way, beautiful design. At least not without outside help, like a star league memory core or similar assistance. The exception might be Dr. Banzai, but we all know, it is unkown where he comes from. He might even have capellan ancestors.

Entering service =/= Fielded as they got jacked by the Feds before the Caps could use them.

And lets be honest here, its not like the Capies needed the Phract, they were going to lose anyways. <_<

If they did redesign it it would be a masterstroke for the game. It's such a needed role.

And how long did the victory hold, until the ConCap returned the conquered worlds back home under the protective hands of the chancellor? I wouldn't call that a victory, it was a temporary gain in territory, gained by treachery. It was also a big waste of resources and lives.

And no... the victor doesn't always write the history books. They'll try, but often enough sanity and neutral eyewitness reports triumph over glorification.

Infamous Impaler got it straight from Paul during one of his livestreams on NGNG this past week, either Tuesday or Wednesday. Though I think it was Wednesday night's stream.
