So I wake up this morning, and still a bit groggy, sipping my first cup of coffee, decide to take my JM6-A out for a spin, since I think with my recent bout of "Locustitis" and my new found appreciation for the KTO-18, it's been feeling a bit neglected.

Viridian Bog.

Assault.

I approach the center along our right flank, just behind an Orion and a T-bolt, TAG/LRMs/ERPPC at the ready.

Red team appears just to our left, approaching center from their own right side.

Action starts to focus on the C4/B4 area, as more mechs arrive, and start pouring their firepower in to the mix.

I light up first another Jager, then a King Crab, then a Stalker, then a Orion. Just painting any mech that pops into vision with my TAG and flinging blue fire and rain at them. Closing to that magic 200-300 meter range where LRMs really shine.

At first we're trading kills back and forth, even taking turns being 1 kill up, but then, that changes at about the 6-5 mark, and we start dropping them, and focusing fire on anything left standing. I got a couple kills in, and knew I had at least a small handful of assists, before my ammo hit the 25% mark, and then I got cut off by a pretty nice flanking maneuver by what I think might have been the Orion from before and I think one other mech. They've got me outgunned at short range, and they're both faster than I am (I only have an XL 265 in that thing), so knowing the writing's on the wall for me, just try to move back to my team, spreading damage as best as I'm able, while continuing to fling LRMs at my Team's targets.

Eventually the inevitable happens, and I lose a ST, and die to engine death, but by then, it was too late for Red team, and my surviving teammates just had the two mechs that cut me off to mop up.

End screen pops up.

WHOA! My 2nd ever 1k damage game!

1016 damage, 2 kills, 7 assists, match score 133. Roughly double our next highest scoring teammate in both damage and match score. Felt great, not just that feeling of really being valuable to the team, but also in that it was a pretty solid game all around, from both sides, with several players in the 400-500 damage range. And this time, I remembered to take a screen shot...several actually.

Except...and this is my whine:

Turns out I don't actually know how to take a screenshot in the game engine, and what I thought was going to do it, didn't actually do it, and no screenshot appears to exist anywhere that I expected it to be.

My sense of "I'm an unstoppable fighting machine who really made a difference in this match" accomplishment, faded, rather quickly, into a "I'm a computer illiterate newb with no better sense of my technology than my 93 year old grandmother has about her remote control" kind of feeling.

My motto remains...

"Laugh at thyself, and laugh often."

my attempts at heavies/assaults range from bad to worse. i think the jager is about the only one of them i do decent with. then i pop into my cent AH for one match and get 2 kills and 800 dmg- or the combined total of my atlas and tbolts over the course of the day.

i know my biggest mistake in the bigger mechs- i try to advance...

need to work on being more cowardly. maybe adding some lrms might help me with that?

I have the same issue with assaults. I make the critical error all noobs make, I try to ASSAULT THINGS with my assaults.
I've been experimenting with a quad UAC-5 +mk7 TC whale tonight.....I found I can cower multiple enemy assaults solo....but not for long when they realize my team-400m behind me STILL won't move out from cover...

F12 to screenshot.

The picture will be put into your Piranha folder, under the User folder for the game.

See, damn it all. Here I was pushing Alt + "Insert/Prt Sc" (it's a laptop).

Going to give your way a try in the training grounds before I launch another match, to see if I can find them.

Thanks Kjudoon!

Man, do I feel that.

The number of times I have led a charge in anything from a Locust to a LRM boat, just to try and make SOMETHING happen on our side of the field.

Rip if you pressed the prnt screen button, that saves the image into your clipboard. Meaning you can go to paint, and paste the picture there. As long as you have not copy pasted something else after your attempt at screen shotting.

New whine.

Got all excited at the possibility IraqiWalker created in my mind.

Opened up Paint.

Pasted.

Saw Zach Galifianakis gif that I then remembered that I'd pasted into a comment on the Champions thread telling people to "check themselves" before they "wrecked themselves".

Overcome by irony.

Hilarious, hilarious irony.

On the flipside though, this conversation made me realize that the win in the Jager this morning counted towards the 20 points I need for the Sherman paint.

I'll take it!

Crimson Strait.

Assault.

I'm in my KTO.

Rolling around dropping LRMs. The match is going well for us. I keep getting mechs down to almost dead, only to see the kill get sniped out from under me, but I'm not mad, it's a fun match, and we're playing well as a team.

All of a sudden, we're up 11-5, and there's one Red team mech out there...somewhere. Nobody has any idea where it ended up. Just vague notions. And I still don't have that elusive kill.

I say, "I could use that last kill if nobody needs it". I'm not too attached to the answer, or the outcome, since if I don't get one this time, I'll get one next time, or the time after that, etc. And besides, maybe someone else on the team still needs one as well. Truth is, I'm just stoked that we had a great match.

One guy says..."Rip, are you using LRMs?".

Well, yeah, I'm in a KTO-18. I reply..."yep". Meanwhile, our whole team is spread out all over the map looking for this guy, wondering if he's an ECM mech, or a light shut down somewhere, or what, and most of our team has gone to check one spawn point or another.

Guy replies..."well then I'm not helping you. I did the whole challenge without firing a single lrm [blah blah angry stuff]".

I actually find it kind of silly, petty, humorous, but I say nothing. Just start up the ramp to the upper level of the lake-side of the saddle. I'm completely alone. In pretty good shape, other than some armor damage, but while some of it's orange-ish, none of it's breached as of yet.

And then.

A partially damaged Dire Wolf starts up at the base of the mountain there on the top level. He must have been powered down, laughing as almost our whole team marched under him and up over the saddle to the city side. He's missing an arm, and has a yellow CT and ST, but seems to have plenty of weapons. 45 tons on me, and I think he must have powered up thinking "easy kill". I fade in and out of cover chain firing my LRMs...and kill him instead. The power of the LRM5 chain + BAP + Sensor Range + Target Decay combo will not be denied. ;)

Being able to tell the guy from earlier, "turns out I didn't need you after all" almost made me a believer in karma. :P

My whine is: As someone who despises/fears Firestarters almost obsessively, I get that there may be mechs/builds/playstyles/tactics that annoy you, or that you don't care for, or even disagree with. As a Locust pilot/LRM-boater, I've seen both sides of that coin.

What I don't get is, why must we be such raging douche-faces about it?

Can I tell you why I hate LRMs and If my party has a LRM boat I don't hold locks? Simply, the LRM boat will probably do as much damage to me as the mech I am attacking while I circle him / stay behind him and pelt him with fire.... so yes I get twitchy when I see friendly LRM spam....

Additionally, I know my team is going to lose the match when someone says "I have LRMs need locks" (or some variant of that)

draiocht. You're a genius!

And I find I must amend my tale, since I failed to note the chap in the Mad Dog who had an awesome game as well. And again, not that anyone necessarily had a terrible game. It was fun, and I would not dream of calling it a "carryhard" game, since the team played well together.

And that's fair enough, in-so-far as why people FEEL the way they might feel. I'll be the first to acknowledge that there are a whole crap load of "inefficient" boaters of all stripes out there. And like I say, I despise Firestarters.

But Firestarters who drop arty on their mates is also a thing. Dires that alpha mates in the back. Also a thing. And so on, and so on, and so on.

Which is why I don't understand the way we TREAT other players. Let them show us that they are that kind of Firestarter/Dire Wolf/LRM boat/etc, before we make that call. I've seen plenty of Dire pilots who play tough, and smart, and have great games. So I can't just presuppose that they all want to alpha me in the back. Right?

*Edited to add, I will grant you that, LRM-Boats that depend on other people to hold locks probably aren't doing it right to begin with. :P

NARC/TAG/BAP/PPCs/UAV/Modules people. If you aren't using at least 1-3 of these things in some combination (2-4 even really) on your boat, you're probably in for a world of..."under-performance"? ;)

While I can somewhat understand that. It's not really an excuse. In my BLR-1S I've carried more matches than I can count, as an LRM boat. There was at least one match that I will never forget, where the enemy team thought we had at least 4 LRM mechs, when it was just my BLR providing support to three separate conflicts simultaneously.

As for the LRM mech dealing damage to you. That's a complaint that LRM boats have as well. You guys can see where our LRMs are coming from, don't face hug the opponent, and when they die, don't walk over their corpse while we have about 100 or so missiles in the air. (It's why I stop firing on an enemy mech when it looks like it's about to die.)

For the record. I only have one LRM boat, it's the 1S, and I'm thinking of swapping it into a brawler with an XL 400. I'm thinking of running the KGC-0000 as an LRM boat with 4xLRM15s, but that's still undecided (I need DHS, and Endo first)

Totally. One of the most important things in boating well is to know when to NOT fire. And man, the scenario you've described there, ESPECIALLY happens to me on Canyon Network when the team gets split up. I often go to the middle and support both sides B)

I have two boats myself, my KTO-18(C), and my JM6-A. I own the 3 Battlemasters that came with the Phoenix pack, and just picked up a 3M in the sale, but I have yet to trick any of them out. Probably will boat out my 1S. When I get around to loading up my KGC, It's just too tempting to stack AC or Gauss though. ;)
