Both are good mechs.
The Shadowhawk has Jump jets so if jumping is a must go with that. All the Shadowhawks have a good mix of missle ballistic and energy hardpoints.
The Jaggermech can sport a bunch of different load outs but for most of the builds with both good firepower and armor you will most likely need an XL engine which will cost you more. Most Jaggermechs specialize in ballistic hardpoints and energy hardpoints.
The Jaggermech can do some builds that the shadowhawk cannot. Mainly dual guass or dual ac20. Otherwise they can have a somewhat similar loadout.
And as always it depends on your playstyle as to what mech you should get.
Edit: you can use this website to check out all the various hardpoints and stock loadouts for each variant of mech to see what suits you best

Welcome to MWO!!!
Just a few posts below, there is a lot of good stuff http://mwomercs.com/...apult-or-jager/
And there is also some of the stuff I said, lol.
EVERYONE HAS OPPINIONS, AND THERE ARE VERY FEW WRONG ONES...
but, the "best" mech, may not be the best for you.
My best mechs and builds, are traditionally better in the hands of better pilots, while their best builds are a less successful for me, due to my skills, or lack thereof. ;^)
1st, get teamspeak, go to Comstar,NgNg(No Guts No
Galaxy, or a private teamspeak site run by a private team(go to Outreach forum).
Voice chat is helpful, and everyone is an expert :^).

Shadowhawk SHD-5M (Engine and heatsink upgrades).
Ballistics are heavy. Heavy things usually need Extra Light engines (normally super expensive unless it comes with the mech). Those two both come with an XL engine.

Do you want to meta or make a mech that suits your personal playstyle perfectly?

I'd prefer a wide weapon selection (5M seems to satisfy this) with moderate speed and enough armor to take a couple of hits

That said the Jager is far tougher than most people think and it's "arms" are pretty difficult to knock off, keeping it well armed longer than my phracts tend to last in heavy firefights.
Buy one and by the time you have it fully basic'd you'll have enough CBills (assuming you follow the rules for smart noob game play - tag every enemy once for an assist, stick with and support the smartest heavies & assaults on your team, never wander off on your own, don't stand still - ever) to purchase the other.
Once you've basic'd a variant of each chassis you'll know pretty well which one you enjoy piloting more.

Good to hear that you are trying to figure out mech loadout yourself. You will probably get killed more often in the beginning than someone who hops on the meta bandwagon.
But the rewards you get when you get used to handling a wide variety of weapons on a single mech at the same time are huge.
You will be able to respond to any situation eventually because you always have a weapon capable of dealing with it.
If you ever need advice on non meta Jenners feel free to ask me.
Or on movement/tactics using speedy mechs that go +125 Kph (i'm really confident about my knowlegde in this particular part).

When it comes to this particular part it's easy to know why it's like this. MWO is not just a thinking persons game.
It's also a game that is most popular among the more mature gamers. Played with a guy who was 56 just a few days ago....or was he 46?
In any case welcome to MWO and good hunting mechwarrior.

IMO a heavy like the Jagger is better suited to "older" players as they are a little tricky to fit and pilot, a Cataphract or thunderbolt are a little more forgiving to new pilots and have a more ballanced set of loadouts.
But thats just me.

Jager DD is a good multi ballistic (6) energy (2)
Jager S is a good multi ballistic (4) energy (4)
As for shadowhawks you get streak builds or multitude of other builds to try from (more versatile then Jagers but less armour).
Just advice I can give you is get double heat sinks with what ever you get of the Shadowhawks and then try different builds till you find one you like. If you need more info on these mechs try skye-rangers.net any regiment and the forums are open to members where their is a lot of info and I know there to be a lot of players who play shadowhawks lately who can help you as well as owning jagers and have mastered them.

I would actually disagree...for the following reasons.
Copied this from another thread I posted in today. The poster was looking for speed, sniping, and hitting things with missiles.
-----------------------
May I recommend the Jager JM6-A? (God, it's like I'm on a crusade I mention this mech so often).
Give this a try.
And if you find that balanced asymmetrical isn't your thing, give this a try and do missile support.
If that gets boring, try direct fire sniping. Or boomshotting.
Or brawling.
Or direct-fire support.
Look, the point is, this mech will give you options and let you try lots of stuff.

Both the Shadowhawk and the Jagermech aren't really themselves without ballistics. That said, I'd go for the Shadowhawk 2D2 if I were you. Best hardpoints of the Shadowhawks - I prefer it over my other Shadows, and that includes the one with the Phoenix bonus! Only builds you can't run on the 2D2 are the multi-ac2 builds.
(For Jagers the S variant is the jack-of-all-trades and can take almost all builds. DD is fun to play, but you have to be a machinegun lover. A is quirky with its utterly limited torso twist. The Firebrand is arguably the best hero mech in the game, but don't buy it as your first jager.)

PGI needs to change this so that New Players can post in this section all they need. If we get trolls, they can be moderated easily enough ... the community seems to moderate itself well in the section anyway. I'll guess the guy you all were helping try to get into the game last night, gave up because of it.
