Hello, My name is IonPhoenix.
Glad to see the great experience of Battletech Mech Warfare and story come to
Videogaming again.
I have played Mech games since Battlezone(yes a tank game but close enough) to
Mechwarrior for the SNES to the PC Mechwarrior 2, MW3,MW4. I played the other mech
games, but none ever made me feel like i was there, in a Mech, showing my skill, and testing
my builds, like battletech mech influenced games. My fav, was MW3, for builds, and MW4 for
looks and gameplay balance.
I played in the days of The Zone, and MW3 multiplayer gaming. You may know me, if you
played at that time. I was known as Ionphoenix, Orion, Radiation, or as Max-Damage.
When i wasn't battling on the fields of some foresaken world, i was battling in the forums.
My skills were honed in a shadowcat (aka Scat) in MW3. I was a ferocious jump sniper in MW4.
My fav mech was the Scat, with 14 er small lasers with maxed jump cap, and maxed engine
speed. My tactic was to find a hill, jump over my enemy, hit thrust at last second, land on other
side of my enemy, fire all 14, hit jumps, while going backwards, then, hit forward, and fire
again, with all 14, while tapping the jj's. This usually scored a double tap to a torso, and
most often a kill. I would scamper off, to find another victim.
In MW4, the scat was just useless thanks to complete redesign of the mechbuild options, so
i had to learn a new technique. I choose the much maligned jump sniper tactic, This was simply
a sniper style, with a jump capable mech, and hiding behind low hills, or hard to rush hard
barriers like buildings and walls. Jump up, shoot, just as you clear obstruction, then fire, and
drop, behind said barrier. My fav was the MkII. Fill it up with ER Lrg Lasers and Light guass.
I made a scat with a light guass and a er lrg laser, but it didn't have the fun of MW3 scats.
I made many mech builds for city fights and open fights. it was fun, but then, in those days,
you could chose the map, and you didn't have this one death that you have in this game.
If i had issues with this game, it would be that it has no choices on infinite spawn, or a set
amount of kills, and not being able to chose that map, thus selecting the mech to match
the battle. The mechlab should also be a little more intuitive.
That being said, Some mech combat in Battletech Universe is better than none.
I am glad to be here.

Welcome to the game - not sure what to say beyond that, but I might have more to add in a few days.
If you have any questions feel free to ask though.
Cannot guarantee an answer (or rather, an answer that fits) but someone will probably have something to say at the very least.

Very nice glad to read this and hopefully the game is adequate enough for you, a veteran of the old games. Eventually (hopefully) we should get a sort of dropship mode that will have you choose multiple mechs to drop in a game when one is destroyed. At least that is what I have heard about.

These things are slowly changing. Despite the game being officially "released", they are still making fundamental changes to the game. A big part is the upcoming Community Warfare. A lot of details are still sketchy at best, but it promises to add another layer to the game.
And welcome!

Ah, might not have been the original Battlezone, but it was the best. And it did indeed have mechs in the PC 1996 or 97 re-imagining.
Welcome.
Unfortunately the details on Community Warfare are subject to change. But one idea that was bounced at the launch party was dropships and an idea of being able to attack in waves. Say you have two dropships with a limit of 450 to 660 tons. If you managed to fit all 12 players within that tonnage range but put the second dropship to attack the same planet, you could in theory have a second wave to spawn in before the enemy could repair. There had been talk of potentially a 4 mechs per player drop system. Perhaps 'delivering' a mech mid-match to replace a fallen one. Other ideas included sequential battles where a fight takes place here on this part of the planet, then everything resets for a fight at that part.
Of course, to counter the multi-wave thing the targeted planet could have had a garrison to protect it. Say mechs assigned to it; so the two attacking waves might be up against three defending waves. Or it could be a poorly defended garrison with a skeleton crew and turrets.
But again, sketchy at best. I personally like the first idea mentioned in the paragraph above, but a recent balance decision might alienate that possbility.
Here's what was said. Remember that things may be subject to change.
In the mean time where there is not a respawn mechanic currently in play, you will find yourself right at home with the sniper tactics. Replace lasers with PPCs or Autocannons or Gauss Rifles and you're golden. Be advised there was a balance change to LRMs. And as typical with any balance change everyone is trying them out. If you can sneak up on an LRM boat you can have a lot of fun ripping it to shreds -- they might be dangerous if you're locked but once you get 'too close' they are completely helpless.
See you in the field.

Welcome to the game. A couple things not mentioned are:
*Cadet Bonus (though you should be aware due to new achievement system) is 25 first matches and you'd be able to get yourself a mech afterward.
*Smurfy: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab Plan your builds here, soon coming to UI 2.0, as seen with mech detail page.
*And the mastering of the mech. You need 3 variants of a chassis to master a mech.
What we call the jump-sniping technique is poptarting. You should be right at home with all the mechs in the game, especially some older mechs you'd be more familiar with (assuming you had MW4 Mercs and possibly Mekpak 3.1). Highlander (MW4 Mercs), Victor (MW4 Mercs), Cataphract (3D only, not in MW4), Quickdraw (not in MW4), Shadow Hawk (only Mekpak 3.1), and Blackjack (only Mekpak 3.1) would all be worthwhile first mechs inferred from your liking to poptarting. Some disfavor it, but it's a tactic and totally workable. Good luck in the field though.

Welcome. Nice to see another older and experienced player joining.
You will find MWO familiar though in some respects quite different to other MW titles. Many important design decisions (esp ghost heat, ECM) will have you scratching your head.
There is very little tutorial information available from the developers, who are more focused on monthly revenue creation opportunities than onboarding new players or completing the metagame. However, these forums will be very valuable to you.

they actually do have intentions on map selection or changing mech choice based on the map. not here yet.
MWO can have a steep learning curve, so please do feel free to ask if you have any questions, no matter how trivial

Great to hear a veteran's story of his gaming past. You will find a lot of vets and new blood here. You will want to hit up one of the community team speak 3 servers: Comstar, No Guts No Galaxy and there are a few others. Check out the faction's sections lower for a Inner Sphere Great House, Clans of Kerensky or the Marc Corp - Outreach sections of the forums. You will find a lot of player run units.
There are a Brian Cache worth of information kicking around and just as many other Mechwarriors who are glad to help out.
Welcome to MechWarrior Online, and the forums. Time to strap on the neurohelmet, power up the fusion reactor and get all systems nominal.
See you on the battlefield.

Yes, Ask questions. Even when you are in game or in the forums here. Someone may have an answer, or an answer that requires though before the reply.
This game does have a steep learning curve and even us that have played other MechWarrior games still round a corner and die, without doing much damage from time to time.
If you can get on a teamspeak server for voice. No Guts No Galaxy has one that is open with an area for pickup matches. Some times you can PUG the matches, but it is fun to run and talk with other players. Some times not even about the game. Go figure.
