I don want to go into to much detail as I'm on my phone but the worst IMO is the trebuchet...that's really the only one I think looks crappy even though it is still a cool looking mech, just compared to the others it's not as good.
My favourite by appearance
1:cataphract
2:QuickDraw
3:centurian
4:Gryphon
5:jagrmech
Other then the cataphract they would all be interchangeable for me, pgi has a fantastic art team

And yeah, the "eyes" on the VTR annoy the crap out of me. If there were like you say, just a few tweaks, it would be awesome. Kinda how I feel about the ShadowHawk, TBH. Put a little more flair, and a non crap looking head? Might be cool.

I'm comparing this to anything. It's my opinion (and yours, and everyones) of what they do or do not like. Nothing more.

LOL! Love that image. Thankfully the eyes on bucc disguise it somewhat, but it's so bad in base paint that mine are named Eucalypto, PouchySlouch, JoeyNotABear, MarsupaLilly and MrSoupyAl.

And you've nailed it on the Victor. It's SO CLOSE to being totally amazing and has just a few wrong things that make me just hate it because it is. just. so. close.

awesome is the best looking.

then catapult with the uac5 on the side torso

cataphract

banshee

cicada

and commando.

worst:

the worst one is the griffin, imo. the cockpit makes it look like a toy, not really armored enough for combat.
reminds me of the yellow suit ripley uses in aliens, that's how clunky it looks to me.

also the jenner is ugly

and the orion's cockpit again, looks off. the whole orion looks like it's made from lego

Damn I agree with so much of this!
Also anymech with the updated UAC5 looks BOSS
Just wait till UAC10/20!!!!!!

Sure maybe its not the pretiest but I think it is quite unique.
Its probably the lankiest mech ingame which is sorta cool, Its got Beefy Traps for shrugging jenners, its left arm is badass, and its right arm pisses me off to no end and is ugly as hell so there is that...

the only problem I had with the Banshee is that they used some dark a muddy looking textures that hide any detail on the mech. wish this was the camo, or color scheme they should have used for La MalinchePosted Image

I agree, I found every camo spec on the banshee to be sub par, only one I find half decent is the raider

the side angle flatness, the kinda MEH head and the dinky right lower arm are what kill the treb for me.

I think the side angle flatness is to make up for its height (think of it as a sasquatch). I think its head is pretty damn unique looks like it could take some hits aswell. And yes the strange right arm is the worst feature.
I actually named my buckets
sasquatch
bigfoot
yeti

Best:

Firestarter
Griffin
Thunderbolt
Victor

Worst:

Jenner (yeah, I really hate the looks)
Wolverine
Cataphract
Stalker

And now I'm just wondering why the heck I went and bought Cataphracts instead of Thunderbolts...

It feels like the art and modeling departments get into trends with the mechs, and we get several that look alike before getting something new. For example, the Jager and Blackjack; the Treb., Quickdraw and Victor; the Battlemaster and Banshee. Maybe it's just my imagination, but it really feels like there are phases of mechs released in (relatively) short time periods. The concept art for the Dire wolf and the Adder makes them look like they are going to be like twins (albeit one has a 65 ton weight problem!).

That said, I find most of the mechs enjoyable to look at, and here Is my list of the best/worst and 1st runner(s) up:

Light

Best: Locust (they're so cute!), Raven (actually does remind me of bird)
Worst: Spider, Commando (just both very plain)

Medium

Best: Cicada, Centurion/Hunchback/Shadowhawk (tie)
Worst: Backjack (looks like a "mentally challenged" Jager with love handles), Trebuchet (just boring)

Heavy

Best: Catapult (best looking and designed mech by far! FIX THE CATAPULT EARS PGI!!!!!), Orion (very unique structure)
Worst: Quickdraw (boring), Dragon (PGI gave it the Cadillac hood but failed to put on a hood ornament....very tacky PGI)

Assault

Best: Stalker (+1 for Misery), Awesome (beautiful but a little too fat)
Worst: Battlemaster (concept art was great but the final render just looks like a bunch blocks), Victor (Like a giant trebuchet)

The best looking mechs in any match are the one that you survive in and the ones you are standing over...

My favorites: 1 - Jenner. 2 - Centurion. 3 - Cataphract. Not a huge surprise, considering that the JR7 and CTF are my most played mechs by a large margin. I don't play my Cent as much; but it's one of the most radical redesigns, and I think it looks great.

My least favorite redesign is the Awesome. It looks fantastic if you shrink it horizontally by about 40%. It's my favorite assault mech, and I'm kinda sad it's such an easy target.

Best:
Light - Raven (I know people hate the thing, but I've loved 'em for so long)
Medium - Centurion (Griffon is a close runner up)
Heavy - Catapult (K2 was easily the best pre-PPC visual nerf, and HEY up off my Beak, even if it looks glued on I love it) runner up is the Dragon
Assault - Awesome (the mech looks totally badarsed, particularly with a good paint scheme)

Worst:
Light - locust (I can't get around how squat/ huge it is, I feel like it should be 30% small, which would make it way over 30% cooler looking)
Medium - Trebuchet or Wolverine just so bland.
Heavy - Orion is just boring
Assault - Banshee

I also agree that the newer mechs all look very cut and paste with what seems to be too similar parts mech to mech to really make them feel different. The Griffin is a standout exception in the bunch.

I've been tempted to buy a Griffen just because the cockpit looks so cool.

This is really interesting, I thought we would see alot of people saying the same mechs are good / bad looking. Except everyones views are quite different, and mixed.
For instance 2 people have the same favorite light but one likes the cataphract and the other hates it. Not the kind of results I would have expected and its a good thing, just goes to show how much indivdual preference in looks, decides what mechs you pilot / prefer.

Best/worst
1. Jenner/spider - I like the functional look of the Jenner, and the spindly spider limbs are off-putting to me.
2. Centurion/cicada - The mowhawk, gun arm and stocky build are all pretty good on the cent, but the box with legs thing makes the cicada look like a yugo.
3. Jager/Dragon - One barrel for each pupil and a spoiler to boot. I actually like the dragon, just not as much as the other heavies.
4. Atlas/Stalker - It's close man, I really like the highlander too. The stalker though, that thing looks hilarious. One bum rushed me at full steam this morning, and I nearly shot coffee out of my nose; those fat legs were just pumping away while humpty-Dumpty hung on for dear life.

On my phone and thus no pics, but...

Best:
Locust, Jenner runner up
Griffon, with Hunchbacks and Centurions tied for and extremely close second
Catapult (particularly the K2, but regular cats as well, preferring the original versions of all of them - long PPC and no additional LRM boxes). Runner up: Jagermech. Its ugly, but looks like it should.
Atlas.

Worst:
Commando. Its just silly.
Shadow Hawk. *yawn*
Quickdraw. Orion is much uglier, but IMHO the orion is supposed to be ugly and as such its ugliness is a good thing.
Victor. I hate how victors look.

As an aside, relative to other things mentioned in this thread:

Sherman works very well on the banshee, but that's probably got a lot to do with how spectacularly well done Sherman is for most mechs.

I definitely prefer less humanoid mechs as a rule. I like ones that look like purpose built war machines more than people. With that said, the Atlas' level of detail and awesomeness beat out the blandness of the Stalker.

I do have to agree with Bishop Steiner's comment earlier though, that the newer mechd appear to be lacking in detail compared to the earlier mechs - sort of backwards if you ask me.

Also - despite my loving the Locust, griffin, and Battle master, I was REALLY let down by the Phoenix mechs. Pretty miffed, actually. They had so much detail shown on the order page, but ended up being very bland when delivered. It makes me extremely hesitant to buy the clan mechs.

watch devlog 3.

alex iglesias talks about design of cockpit of the banshee based on what faction built it.
he does the same cockpit designs (or similar) with faction mechs.

which would also explain why trebuchet, cicada, awesome and stalker have that "bunker" style cockpit

Meh, I love the Raven art. It looks right without making the mech look bulbous, as has been done in most other computer versions of battletech.
