I seem to remember from somewhere early on that shutting down breaks missle lock. Does it still do this? Because it seems to.

Yes it does, with one exception. A 'Mech equipped with a Beagle Active Probe can target (and, thus, achieve lock on) a shutdown Mech within like 180m (or 150 or something, I don't remember).

Yes, it does. However, the missiles will continue toward your last known location when they lose lock - which you happen to still be occupying. Breaking lock with shutdown is only useful if you are traveling through the air with a good trajectory, like with jump jets.

Great, thank you. It seems to work pretty well when being targeted, then getting behind cover and letting AMS help, then doing a quick shutdown / startup. I've been doing this regularly and haven't had much trouble with the LRMageddon, though of course enough cover makes you immune to missles anyways.

yep missiles will go to the last known location. dropping off a cliff works good too. also once behind cover you will keep a spotter ie light behind/to the side from maintaining lock. so follow up volleys are not to bad. a boat with a adv target decay will still hold lock for 3 seconds after you duck if you don't shut down.

Yes, it's the cover that's helping you more than shutting down. Since the missiles will hit the location where you shut down, you'll get hit if the enemy still had lock when you shut down - and if he'd already lost lock, where did the shutdown get you? Either way, shutting down gets you nothing; it's not a primary tactic for avoiding LRMs. =)

Which should result in your mech crashing and exploding on impact if done.

You can also shut down while moving forward full throttle, you'll stumble for a bit while shutting down. The effect is more noticeable for faster mechs. It might be enough to get out of the path of incoming missiles, try it in Testing Grounds if you don't want your team to watch your derpy shutdown testing.

if some one use narc on you other mechs still can target you, even if shutdown

Just so everyone knows, BAP will detect shutdown mechs within 120m, which means, that if you get the lrm incoming warning and are within 120m of an enemy mech that you think might have BAP, do not shut down, because the enemy lrm boat will be able to maintain that lock and continue firing while you're shut down.
