I haven't played in long enough that the game has undergone a lot of changes. Mostly I play to blow things up, but I want to grind GXP and Cbills in preparation for the eventual Timber Wolf drop (some of my favorite clan mechs are coming!).

I kind of want to try some of the new mechs that have dropped since I last played, but I don't know which ones are decent and work with my style. (run and gun, mostly. I really like Med and Heavy, but I'm not too much of a missile boat person)

Or maybe I should stick with my current line up (founders, a HBK-4P, and the CTF-IM). I'm really enjoying the 4p build I'd put together before I stopped playing.

I'd suggest mastering those mechs, Hunchies and Cataphracts. The Founders mechs and the CTF-IM should make money quick enough, and then you'd be able to get enough money (whether or not you're getting the Clan Pack) to outfit the mechs desired.

Okay, I'll go that route. Still have to get used to the new mechbay but most of mine seem to have decent enough loadouts that I can play around with the assault and light too if I want. Thanks!

Have you met the Victor? Run and gun is what this mech is made for. Consider a 9B, 9K or 9S depending on which weapons you prefer.

The Cataphract 3D is still very good with any 2xPPC+whatever setup.

The Ilya will be useful for grinding Cbills. If you don't have it mastered, you should consider doing so by buying two other 'phracts. After that, you will have a solid chassis that has been popular and usable since it came out.

I use the shd-5m for hit and run. 2 ac5 and 2 mlas with xl300. Opponents take a while to locate me since the ac rounds are not immediately traceable.

Having the Legendary Founder pack and an Ilya puts you in a great position to gain . you have a top tier Hero mech as well as a full suite of c-bill boosted Founder mechs.

There are many new mech since then, but the venerable Jenner and Atlas are still solid choices.

Newer mechs worth playing include the Firestarter(Stiff competition for the Jenner), any of the jumpjet-equipped 55tonners(Shadowhawk, Griffin, Wolverine), you already own a Catapract and should consider investing in more of those get Master, and the Victor is a excellent hit & run Assault(much like a slighty big Heavy)

If you goal is to bank lots of C-bills, you don't really need any "new" mechs. Fill out your CTFs so you can have a fully-skilled Ilya Muromets to go with your Founder mechs and you'll be rolling in cash. Consider Premium Time: It's lots of fun to bring home over a quarter of a million in one match in a Hero mech+Premium time :)

I find the T-bolts make good heavy run and gun. 80ish top speed, large lasers, a LRM rack to focus fire from any where on the field, and it can run an XL well. Or drop in some SRMs for a hard in close punch.

Actually all the SHDs work really well as a hit-and-run platform. You can cram a pretty good size engine in there, plus jumpjets, plus the high mounted balistic(s) make it so you can peek-a-boom your enemies pretty well. I've seen any number of balistic combinations work really well with the SHDs also. Some folks do well with 3 MG light hunters, I've seen people tear stuff up with dual ac5 configs. I personally like to use a 20, but I've even had decent luck with 10s and bigger lasers or missile racks as backup.

Thanks for the advice! I'm going to try different kits on my IM and founders and find the ones that are the most fun and run with those! (I found a U/AC5 build in another thread that's pretty fun)

I might try a Shadowhawk too.

You really should focus and master some of the mechs you already have. The Elite skills are a great touch, and once you reach Master and double the basic skills, the mechs really come into their own.

My experience is limited with the 'phract and most of the Founder's mechs (I grabbed the Cat), but the trial Cataphract was a lot of fun to use, I'd imagine the Ilya would make a great platform.

Ain't nothing wrong with the Founder's mechs.

Those who hang around the new player threads have seen these a dozen+ times, but... (These are chase-cam videos).

Hunchback 4G. XL 275, LB10x, 2 MGs, 3 SPL. 7 kills.
Atlas AS7-D. Standard 300 engine, AC5/AC2, SRM-6, LRM-10, 1 ton of ammo each and 4 ML (joke build, surprisingly successful). 6 kills.

In both cases the other voices are not participating in the same match. My camera man doesn't record his own voice, and in both cases it's a 2 man premade. My mech + his camera commando 2D with ECM.

Enjoy.

If I'm not misinterpreting "run and gun" as playstyle (which defintely could be), then it's what I'm doing most of the time myself

The chassis which really suits me in this, is a lot of fun to play for me and I have the best results in is the BlackJack.
(ok, haven't got many different chassis yet - so it's the best so far for me). I'm playing them all as close-quarter escorts / supporters / finishers / assassins - ah the heck, you pack so much firepower in these little mean machines, you'll blowing up things left and right.
I'm not so into missiles neither, and none of the BJ's sports missile hardpoints. (@Koniving: yeah ok, none of the implemented BJ variants as of yet  ), so you can skip those and go for energy & ballistic (or energy only, depends on the BJ variant).

Many say the BJ's are too fragile... but for me they're just working. I achieve better results (and survive longer) in them as in my Thunderbolts - go figure. Seems BJ's just suits my playstyle very well ^_^

So maybe you just want to give the BJ's a try.
(we can deepen this further if you like, why they work for me, talking about builds, acting on the field etc.)

Also pretty suicidal for anything but late-match cleanup vs lots of open armor. If going back to the Hunchie, I would stick to an AC20 build. Realistically, if going with an XL on a Hunchie (don't), you'd probably be better served with a ranged setup.

Run and gun? Jagers with a 280-300 XL. Any of them. Heavy ballistics, heavy on lasers, or equal. Works on all of them. The 'running' part is essential AFTER the gunning though, since everyone loves your juicy side torsos. Every time you decide to make a stand 1v1, make sure you can take it. Always try to get ranging shots in first to test where the armor is weak, and have cover to bail into if your losing that firefight.
