Okay, after thirteen pages of rage, let's dissect this one a little.

1) People really do want this mech in the game. They're willing to pay real money, and this joke kind of feels like a slap in the face to them.

2) It's a slow Light. Sure, it packs a wallop with an AC10 (or 20), but it has a Light's armor without a Light's mobility. If you've ever run a Light in this game at slower than 116kph, you know what a death sentence that is. Now imagine running one at Stalker speeds...or slower.

3) It could be a fun, challenging mech. There are a few people that would run this thing just to prove it's viable.

4) ...but that might hurt their team as they could be running a Light that would actually be capable of doing things Lights are needed for (scouting, spotting, harassing).

5) The engine isn't set up for these little guys.

So there you have it.

All that said? If MWO did drop the Urbie, I'd get one, too. It's an iconic mech in this universe. While I probably wouldn't drop it in a CW match, where an actual world was at stake, if there's still PUG games just for fun, I'd totally drop in one just as a change of pace.

How about:

6. It's an April Fools Day prank that is still getting featured on the official news sources for MWO and the entire thing is being played straight faced. If you are going to pull an April Fools Day joke then you have to redact it the moment April Fools is over. Otherwise you are spreading lies, misinformation and arguably false advertising.

And people regularly quote The Onion as an official news source: ignorance isn't protection from reality. I mean, come on: this was OBVIOUSLY a prank.

Zero armor. Dual REAR-FACING AC20s. Comes without an engine but you can equip a FREAKING TOW LINE.

Who read that and believed it??

I wish I did, I knew it was a horrible joke from the onset and just waited for it to vanish into the aether.

Doesn't matter if people quote The Onion as a news source. It does matter when a major news network runs an article from The Onion as real news. The Onion is a parody site, MWOMercs is the official website for the MWO free to play game.

It's posted by InnerSphereNews in the Announcements section and pinned to the top past April 1st. It's right here with announcements of maintenance and the new Raven hero.

Edit: I should point out that the past news posts announcing that they were adding in Heat Penalties (what we came to know as ghost heat) and 3rd Person View sounded like a bad joke at the time. Doesn't matter how believable or not it is, it isn't proper to masquerade an April Fools Prank as Official News about your product beyond April 1st. And they still are.

Maybe PGI can introduce a new game mode whereas a match is limited by Mech cost. Set the max price of mech to something really low like an unbuffed non-ECM Commando/Raven/Locust. The story line could be a scouting raid on a backwater planet by a third tier rouge mech unit, starving outcast clanners or second rate pirate band vs a backwoods city militia using second hand mechs and police urbies. Have the Militia defend a base backed by a light turret grid for good measure. The base could be a small city, sensor outpost, mining camp, or even a remote drop ship port using our existing maps. That is the scenario they had in mind when they designed the Urbie.

Lets be honest PGI.

We want this to be real.

I saw the mech and opened my wallet that this joke was a limited edition mech. I knew from the stats it was garbage and this was joke day but if it was real I was not going to miss it. Let me say that again, wallet was out. I wanted the one with rear faceing AC20 s. The humor and ugly paint color was too much to miss out on. Also the number of jaughs I had when I read this post gave me tears and that was worth money.

On a side note I though the urban mech could not twist.

PGI, do not make a joke about a 100 foot, quad ac20, 165 Ton mech... Ppl will expect it. How dare you let them down.

Well, I actually could see a situation where an Urbie would be useful. If it's a base defense mode (you're defending your world from the invaders in CW), and the 3/3/3/3 is in effect (will that actually be the case? I mean, part of war is overwhelming your enemy - if they decide to defend a world with a single Locust, and you attack with four Atlases*, they SHOULD lose that world), the greater firepower the Urbie could bring to that defense might be useful: just leave him behind to blow away any lights that roam too close.

I just think it's an iconic mech - it's up there with the Atlas and the Battlemaster as far as famous mechs go. I'm hoping PGI rolls out the real one in a month or so. Again, I'd actually pay REAL money for one, goofy or not.

*Steiner - go fig

It was hardly being played straight faced.

Except, of course, that nobody's ever actually asked for a 100 foot, quad AC/20, 165 ton 'mech.

Whereas the Urbie has been a more or less standing request from as far back as 2011 (be sure to look at the number of likes that one post has)

Edit: A google search for "site:mwomercs.com urbanmech" returns 4600 results, that's how often it gets mentioned around here - usually because someone wishes it was in the game. Those numbers work out to about five times per day on average since 2011.

I guess they're to busy buggering up UI2 with a 12 hour hardware update, than can spare the time to remove the april fools joke.

I think pgi hit a new low with a feast of mech lab bugs and 'stability improvements'

The Urbanmech should not be on the field with a bunch of open-terrain, mobile, direct warfare 'mechs. It's a total immersion-breaking joke, not to mention a severe balance mismatch and a crutch to a team, and PGI would get crucified if they tried it.

I have no idea where this obsession with one of the absolutely worst 'mech designs in BT lore comes from. It you removed the name and put those stats to another name, no one would be going "oh give me that 'mech it's awesome". Everyone sitting here going I need an Urbie, would be talking about how horrible this 'mech is.

That's the point.

and i outlined a schemetics of upgrades that would put it on par with a spider or raven. please get this straight...

STOCK URBIES ARE NOT FINAL URBIES YOU WILL NOT BE DOA WITH MWO'S CUSTOMISATION!

oh and immersion, we're not even close to faction specific mechplay, hell we're going to have clan mechs in IS ranks before the clans embed their invasion properly and you don't think locusts and awesomes etc break the team balance ratios? plz argue harder.

seriously urbie haters you can't handle the power of an upgraded urbie, which would be allowed in MWO, the potential is glorious and pgi are fools not to consider it.

heard of the little engine that could? urbie is are very own in the battletech universe, no other mech in exsistance commands as much affection for an underdog as much as urbie does. that's the point for laughs and affection there is none greater than owning your own little urbie

This was quite possibly the most disgusting, tasteless, and cruel April Fools joke I have ever witnessed.

Hmmmm, I'm really hoping that many people are been sarcastic here. ;)

I would love to the Urban Mech myself ingame one day, but this April's Fools joke didn't upset me at all.
I actually liked it.

What? To add completely useless 'mechs? Sure, that seems like a legit direction to take a game.
