MWO's servers are written in Python and C++. MWO is written in C++.

Algorithms, data-structures, math; yes all hugely important. Far more important than what particular languages you know. Of course, you won't actually get too far without actually learning a language too.

Just because I'm curious...Does one have to obtain a commercial licence to get full access to cryengine source code? It always seemed a bit locked up to me with their free SDK kit.

Source code is proprietary information. Getting full access to source code almost always requires multi-million dollar agreements. I've heard that the Unreal 3 engine could top $10 million and comes with NDAs and strict rules for usage. It's not something they want to see getting pirated, so they're extremely careful with who they give it to.

But you don't need access to the source code to develop a game. The level of access offered through all the new indie licenses is more than enough to make a AAA title.

Unlike Epic, which gave away their source for a buck and had it pirated wholesome in less than a week.

Worries coming true aside, I really doubt anyone would actually try and steal the code off of them.
Proving it's theirs would be a breeze and anyone foolish enough would probably stand no chance against them.

To be honest, I actually don't know. It was certainly true when we started MWO that a commercial licence was required. Otherwise we would have been able to do a much better evaluation of the engine before any contracts were signed. Now that Unreal and CryEngine are in a race for Unity's indy market, things may have changed.

This says quite a lot.
