Which trial mechs are you using? If you let us know how you're currently playing, and what mech you're playing in, we can gives tips and pointers.
Help us to help you!

In all honesty, you're not doing anything wrong. The game has a very steep learning curve and you're just starting out. It's to be expected that you'll perform poorly.

Basically this comes down to, what mech are you piloting? Are you built to contribute damage wise, or intelligence? Are you a scout for capping, or putting yourself in the wrong position?
If you're a light, never be the first man to the fight, and if you're new never get there alone. Stick with the pack, let the other players provide you with cover. Let a bigger mech get attention then you harass and get your shots in.
It will take you time to learn combat roles, and where you should be on the field.
Ignore the trolls, and if you have any particular questions feel free to ask here.. or even PM me if you want. I'll provide whatever tips and advice I can.

It's hard to know what/if your doing it wrong without knowing what you're doing. Give us some more info such as:
-what trial mech do you use?
-what weapons do you use?
-what ranges do you use them at?
-are you dying at beginning of the game or later?
-etc
Try to give us more of an indication of how a typical game may go for you.

#2. When you die, observe people. See what they do. That has helped me the most improve my play.
#3. Yeah people are jerks online. I know I can be to sometimes. Don't worry about jerks its only a game.

To score hits: Disable arm lock, mouse smoothing, mouse acceleration. Lower your in-game mouse sensitivity as much as possible.
To live longer: Stick with your team. Stay in cover when not shooting. Look away from enemies when not firing. Never, ever overheat. Never, ever fully stop (running around in circles or doing small jumps is really not a bad idea if you have nowhere to go).
To help your friends and win: Look around and select targets (default key: R; empty triandle red = target is not selected, possibly not visible to anyone else on the team). Shoot what friendly mechs (especially those bigger than you) shoot. Keep firing until a target is down, not until another comes around. Try to hit the same location every time (it matters which mech part you hit).

First off, treat your matches as learning experiences. You'll lose a lot, this is a competitive deathmatch game with no respawns so you'll get blown up, but as long as you walk away with more c-bills than when you started and a little more experience, you're on the right track.
Ask questions. There are a lot of complicated systems here, damage, heat, movement, none are straight forward. Ask questions about anything you're not sure of! you can skim the Short Question/Short answer thread for some common ones.
This is a team game. No mech is an island. Think about joining with other players- you don't need to join a merc, you can easily drop in/drop out on NGNG or Comstar NA, or you can check the hiring hall/outreach threads for units on the hire. Some units will even post specific newbie training days herein the new player help, give it a try.

JM6-FB "Firebrand witch I started with and my Hunchback grid iron that packs a gauss rifle my worst game without cadet points was 70k. most of the time 100k + invest in the game and you will do well its actually cheaper to get the 49.95 for 12000
mc bucks then buying a $60 + tax game from the store.
And yea I get the noob that pays to win just let it go over your head all so I had a little experience from playing MW in the old days.
O hay get a headset and join a chat server and play with people that love the game and HAVE FUN!

Okay, first as a light pilot scouting you need to take full advantage of your speed and maneuverability. If you are ahead of all your teammates you will often times find yourself targeted quickly if you aren't careful. It is wise to be very diligent in using cover to get to and from where you are going. Don't over commit or over extend. If you are targeted then bail, using cover if possible and always weaving, jump jet bursts, etc to make yourself a hard target. I would suggest only fighting when the odds and circumstances favor you. Retreat to your team when they don't.
As for the catapult or most other mechs in combat, try to stay near other players (preferably near other good players and/or ECM atlas). Again be part of the fight but try not to be the enemy's target. Put shots on the enemy without taking as many. Pop in and out as possible while not being predictable. Again, try to only engage in battle when the circumstances are in your favor. Torso twist, weave, etc to spread dmg. Try to always avoid overheating. It is a surefire way to get smoked.
Lastly, most people have already said to shoot targets that others are already shooting at. If the red triangle is solid then an ally has it targeted. Shoot at it if others are. Try to stay alive even if it means retreating for the moment. People will recommend finding a group to drop with if possible. This with voice comma will definitely help tremendously.
Good luck

When servers are up or down, it is for everyone. Today's downtime was for scheduled maintenance.
If you fill your 4 free mechbays and find that you are having fun, then consider buying stuff. There is really no need to spend a dime for a long time.
