So - I understand I have to unlock all basic modules on 3 variants of a mech to unlock elite - but my question is do hero mechs count?

if i unlock basic modules on deaths knell does it count towards my 3 variants of commando?

Yes, the Hero mechs are just another variant of the chassis. So they count as one of the three you will need for that chassis and counts the same as any other. So you would only need two other chassis plus the hero to do the unlocks.

Hero mechs count as one of the 3 variants(minimum) you need. You can use 1 hero mech and any other 2 mechs in the chassis type.

Champion mechs do not count seperately; a champion counts as the same variant as it's base variant.

And Champions provide a 10% XP Bonus while being pretty much upgraded of the regular mech. Heroes provide 30% C-bill bonus and some other goodies alongside. Both cost MC or real life money.
