Remember Unreal Tournament? I miss the functionality of the insta-chat. Those were some pre-defined messages you could send. Bind a button to it (for example V) and talk with the numbers. No "Enter" needed before or after. Each number would enter a sub-menu or choose some words your character would say.
Some examples:
Typing "V5" would send "Requesting backup at <my coords>".
Typing "V3244" would enter "orders" menu (3), "regroup" order (2) at sector D4 (4,4)
"V435" would enter a "taunt" menu (4), than some submenu (3) and finally the taunt (5), for example "Come out and face me!", "Run faster next time!" or "Nice mech you had there..."
Also, shortcuts for "affirmitive", "negative", and information (Enemy poptart at B5) would be useful.
On the side note, there's this Custom Pilot idea nearby.
The character portrait popping up on the side could really make the taunts/orders/requests much more personal. And it didn't affect the screen much. And especially wouldn't if there were "no taunts" (both yours and enemy) and "disable portraits" options to check.

Pre-defined messages are already on the list. It will likely only be useful tactical stuff though -- I highly doubt taunts will make it into the game.
The other thing, with pilot faces appearing on the HUD ... not likely to ever be an option.

This is reasonable. I'm pretty sure DOTA has a similar system whereby the player holds a key and moves the mouse to navigate a tree of radial menus to be able to auto-chat certain messages. It's fairly intuitive, and especially necessary in a game like that (like this, supposedly) that requires a lot of communication.

They have stated that they're working on something like this. Except they used CS as an example, sooo... who knows.
