i have been noticing a trend lately.
as new players get into the forums and ask a lot of questions, more and more people end up telling them not how to actually play the game, but in fact- how to bypass the many glitches that plague the game; some examples:

NEWB: advice to deal with lights?
answer: don't try laser or SRM, they will just scrape them! if you want your shots to make an impact use pinpoint like ppc or ac.

NEWB: what mech should i pick?
answer: well if you go all energy you will be at a disadvantage, for no particular reason really.
just you will get more heat because tough luck!!!

NEWB: i shot a light mech when it was shut down and it didn't register at all!
answer: there is a glaring bug when a light mech shuts down from speed. its hitbox is somewhere else, try and hit him AS HE POWERS BACK UP, the hitbox will resync..

NEWB: i'd like to be able to do headshots, any advice?
answer: don't try and headshot the jager even if it's standing perfectly still. hitbox is smaller than a penny. instead just hit their sidetorso, sorry.

NEWB: my srm shot fires duds!
answer: leave your missile hardpoints at home! srm is suffering from a catastrophic registration failure and have been for a loooong time. the only part that is quite close to tabletop is using SRM because it's like throwin freaking DICE wether you're gonna do anything or nothing at all with that salvo.

is this really what you want players to come into and see, forget pinpoint and jumpjets - that's the actual metagame which probably any game would have.

this game has a second metagame, things outside the rulebook that you have to know in order to do well, which are all a direct product of game glitches!!!!

and yet you ask people to choose between polishing COMPLETING the game or adding more user interface features?!?!?
just how are priorities sorted, i'd love to know????

so don't tell new players the truth but instead tell them how we wish the game was? That should help them out in game.

And after all that people say "ACs are OP", it looks more like "everyting else is pathetic garbage".

Which, as you go up the ranks becomes increasingly true.

And that's not a really healthy meta now, is it? Especially since some of that (like SRMs) are due to the weapon being broken-ish for the better part of a year.

Actually, Yes! That is the kind of "help" Seasoned players give. Except the Jager advice, I'd challenge teh player to try... Nothing like seeing what you can do right? You are seeing what pros do when helping "the New guy". Forget the textbook What is really needed to be good? The advice you listed is a perfect example.

At my work first things I tell the new guy:
You need to get at least this # of parts done to keep management happy. You can get that done before lunch on a regular day.

The Machine will Hiccup, When it does, do this, with this tool. You'll be back up and running in a flash.
The Coffee pot is there-------------> [_B
You can use my Boom box, but please put MY CD back when you are done.
Any questions?

Also you forgot the whole, 'stay behind cover and death ball because you can't know anyone else's intention due to crappy comms, so take long range weapons or you will just sit there for the majority of the drop'
