Just bought my first Hero Mech (thought it came with its own Mech Bay). I am not concerned about changing the camo pattern right now but the colors have me lost.
Under the old UI, if you change the 3 colors, the old colors are 'stored' in smaller boxes under the ones showing the new colors. So if my original 3 colors were Red, Green, Blue and I change them to Yellow, Orange, Purple, the old RGB colors are shown in smaller boxes as seen in the 4th picture of this post.
With the new UI2.0, I have noticed whatever I set the 3 colors to, the smaller boxes gain them too. There is no ability to store 3 different colors such as the original paint of a Mech. In the example above, the RGB colors would be lost replaced by the YOP colors.
I find this a problem especially since I only have access to the Hero colors on that Mech (thought I gained those too for use on anything). If I ever think of getting those colors, I cannot tell what they are because their names are all DEFAULT.
This problem is also on any Mech I own and also different from the previous UI.
Please find whatever changed in UI2.0 that prevents the original colors from being saved in the smaller boxes and why are the colors not unlocked from the purchase if they are supposed to be.
(Why can I only add Feedback and Bug Report for Tags?)

If you want to return to the original colors of your hero 'mech you can click the blue "RESET"-button just to the right of those boxes you talked about and choose "reset to default camo and colors".

The smaller boxes do act the old way, while you are in the screen changing colors. If you change a color, the old one will be put into the smaller box with the new color in the bigger box. After you save though, it both boxes become the same color, so when you return to the camo screen there is no default "backup" color. For that, you can use the Reset button.
Hero colors are not unlocked. They cannot be used on any 'Mech other than the Hero for which they were designed. Works the same as Founders.
Phoenix colors can be used on other 'Mechs because they came as an extra. Clan Prime colors will be the same way.

Hero colours are not unlocked for use on other mechs. They never were.
As for changing the 'stored' colour function, yes, the UI handles this differently. There is the reset button which led you reset to the 'saved' colours (ie, you made a change and want to revert during the same session) and a reset to default (back to the hero mech default colours)

Well, thanks for all that. Now I await PGI's answer to another question I sent them.
Since Hero colors seem available only for the Hero Mech, what if I want to switch their location? Example, I got a Grid Iron with Default Yellow, Black and White. Currently I cannot switch say Yellow and Black but I think I should be able to on the Hero.

Nah you can't, it's always been like this. The colors coming with the hero only apply to the specific location they came for.
