The Boars Head...

is it me or the Boars head is by far the worst atlas?
Only one ballistic and missile hard point... tones of pulse lasers to overheat with, and ontop of that an XL engine so once someone pops one of your torsos you're dead...
I appreciate the extra speed, but its not much use considering how big of a target the Atlas is.
I took out the XL... but even so, with the loadout as it is, the BH seems incredibly Underwhelming as an assault mech.
any thoughts? (beyond learn to play and aim and it's a good mech...).

Take the XL out of the Boar's Head and it's a beefed up AS7-RS.

No one rates a mech by the stock loadout, as most of them, coming from TT or the minds of PGI, don't translate well into MWO.
Like some others have said, put a Standard in it, run 2 LL, 4 ML and an AC20. Take a slightly slower STD engine and throw an LRM15 on there for fun, too. Nothing wrong with the effectiveness of this mech or the money is can make for you.

I just tried this last night and it is by far the best build I've tried with the BH. Ended up with a STD 355 so it moves pretty good too.
I think that's what I have in it, but I can't remember so I left it to the reader.

- AC20+2xERLL+4xML, STD350. Use big lasers at range, melt faces with the mediums and AC at hugging distances.
- AC20+6xML, STD375. Choo choo...
- UAC5+2xERPPC+4xML. If you can see it, you can kill it.

I use this build on my Boar's Head, and, while it can be a little warm in a brawl, I consistently put out 300+ damage every match. Which makes it awesome for farming C-bills.

I actually have the same build on my Battlemaster. It works better on the Boars Head because of the freedom of movement in the arms.

It's too mixed around, so I suggest possibly trading PPC for more med lasers and either trading LRM15 for SRM6 or making it a bigger LRM rack (LRM20). XL engine should just be switched with other STD engines, though there are some really really niche builds totally usable with XL 400. Just have to find the right combo though.

I did that once with the missile battlemaster...loaded it up entirely with medium lasers and SRM's. I called it the "Splat or go Boom" mech.

Mine carries 2LRM15, 1LRM10 (no - I do not usually alpha them - the 15s yes, the 10 goes separate - usually) and 4ML.
I cannot tell you how many light mechs come running in expecting an easy LRM-boat kill only to receive 4ML to the legs/CT/whatever-the-weakpoint-is (that I can aim fairly easily thanks to the engine - need to get one of the slightly smaller ones like the 375 to experiment with one of these days though)
Of course, I run it more like a skirmisher than a true "boat" so that helps.

seems worth it to be honest.

I treat it like an RS. 4 LL was okay, but it was just another RS. 6 LL... too hot. 6 ML, too underwhelming.
4 LPL...Devastating.
It's like having a twin AC/20 Atlas. Each trigger pull is 21.2. damage and is followed up by another within half a second. 3.85 seconds to recharge instead of 4 seconds to reload. Extremely effective against fast targets as well as slow targets. I was instant-legging lights and then ripping them apart for fun. It's also devastating against D-DCs too.
Tack in some speed and lots of heatsinks, standard engine, and it's just well lets put it this way until I did 4 LPL, I was pissed that I bought it.
