The title says it all.

One of the worst things I see on this forum is comparisons made between KDR and Skill, when in fact a team member who assists with a high damage rate in a game could be seen as a dominant force.

A player who receives high damage and makes a heap of kills is also a dominant force. A player that received a lot of kills on low damage MAY be a dominant force showing efficiency in damage rather than missed shots or spread damage, however some weapons to spread damage and are not all pin point accurate. However the same could be said for someone who merely mops up the remaining cored mechs.

So, given that those above variabilities the only logical conclusion is to add a damage rating to the stats page. Even if that damage was not efficient enough to cause many kills, it can be said with confidence that the user has tasked himself to several assists in damaging many mechs, or a few high armoured mechs.

It reflects enthusiasm and a team effort which is befitting of the intention of the game.

I know several players that intentionally shoot arms and legs to drive up their damage scores. They are often burdens to the team because they're actually trying to keep enemies alive to sink more damage, yet they would be seen as top players if damage stats were revealed. That alone is enough to shy me away from your idea.

However, there's an easy way to get your total damage if you add Tampermonkey to Chrome. It adds a bunch of other columns and color coding as well. I know that doesn't achieve your goal, but you can use it among friends at least. Here's the thread on how to do it:

The amount of damage per match means nothing either.

No I believe it has more relevance than kills but are not definitive statistics. No statistic is, really.

Well, my counter argument to this is firstly, the actions of a few should not burden the majority of the community. For instance, should we eliminate shutting down mechs because some people shut down and hide? Of-course not.

Secondly perhaps you don't see it but it is at times much more beneficial to target limbs than just the CT. Removal of weapons takes a shorter time than removal of engine. Also removal of legs and destabilized mobility can cause a turning tide in a match.

So in response to your post I believe that it is indeed beneficial to include damage stats as a statistic for analysis.

Oh and thank you for that piece of advice that is indeed something I am going to try. It seems you favour your Banshee haha :(

Total damage/matches played = damage per match.

You can easily get the stat for each mech if you really want to. Adding up all the mechs will be some work though.
On the other hand, it's not worth more than k/d to determine if someone is good or not. You can easily get huge damage numbers by spreading nonstop AC fire all over the enemy mech without doing anything worthwile.
Guys who are a good shot with pinpoint weapon tend to cause way more harm on lower damage numbers than guys spreading their damage all over the mech.

Not saying it shouldn't be there, but it doesn't help much either.

Yes I agree that often damage tells the most about what a player did in the match. I also agree that sometimes it's beneficial to leg or arm a mech before coring it. I'm talking about legging an Atlas with full leg armor and then shaving off an arm that's mounting only a medium laser while leaving an AC20 intact. There's more numskulls doing this than you'd think. I guess I don't understand how not seeing your damage stat is a burden.

They don't show Elo, which is really required to make any sense of a damage stat(or KDR for that matter - a stupid stat in itself). Remember that it's a LOT easier to do 1000 damage in a low-Elo match than a high-Elo match. You could have scrubs thinking they were king-shit back-coring newbs that don't even know they're getting shot at. Hell, I'd go hop on an alt account just to enjoy a massive damage stat if it mattered that much. Do you really want me ruining people's good time like that? :D

As much as I dislike KDR being touted as skill (I gained 200% skill by switching to Banshee!), damage done would be even worse. What matters at the end of the match is them being dead and you not being dead, so KDR is at least strongly correlated with good play. Damage done, however, has way too many ways to be an idiot and try to beef up the stat at the expense of good playing.

If you really want a skill stat, it needs to be something along the lines of % damage to killzone. So if a 'mech dies because its CT is destroyed and you did 90% of that damage, you get 0.9 added to your score, with a small bonus for actually delivering the killing blow. It's not perfect of course since taking out the weapon systems makes the kill much easier as well, but it's better than straight KDR.

I could see people exploiting this by trying to get back or head shots to kill a mostly-cored 'mech so that they get 100% of the credit, but if you're able to get regular headshots then you probably don't need to pad your stats in order to appear skilled.

Who the hell cares. Play your game, be productive and as efficient as you can be. At the end of the round our group says "WE got 10 kills, WE did 3000 damage". We don't focus on individual stats because we didn't do it alone.

I have done 1500 damage with no kills, and 200 with 5. Do what it takes to win, who cares how you did it.

High damage is usually a sign of inefficient builds. Not always, but there is a reason that High DPS weapon and Missile Mechs tend to get high damage in proportion to other builds. Because you are spreading it all over the place.

thus, like KDr, there are too many facets to consider much of a gauge for anything.

Until they start tracking hit location accuracy, and other factors, I don't think stats tells us a whole lot, period.
