What I would like is to have a campaign I can run while playing PUG games. Granted, it would be fun if this were official, but even unofficially I think players could run this on their own for fun. You just wouldn't get anything out of it other that bragging rights.
Starting with this flowchart that actually comes from a BattleTech book (Tactical Handbook, out of print due to unseen artwork).
The rules I am planning on using for myself are:
1. A limit of 200 tons of mechs, and also limited to 4 mechs (Leopard dropship payload of 50 tons per each of the 4 bays). Pick from your mechs or Trial mechs, but the total cannot be more than 200 tons.
2. If you win the match, and your mech is alive at the end, move on to the next battle fully repaired.
3. If you win the match, but lose your mech, you have a high percentage to repair it and use it for the next fight, like 40%-80%, depending on which battle it is. I don't have the ratios figure out just yet. For now just flip a coin, heads it repairs, tails you lose it, aka a flat 50%.
4. If you lose the match, but are alive at the end, you keep your mech and use it next match.
5. If you lose the match, and lose your mech, it is gone.
6. When you lose a mech, pick on of the other mechs you have and continue.
7. If you lose all your mechs, you automatically lose.
I don't need PGI to actually implement this, as I can run it for fun on my own, but if something like it were to be added it would be great fun I think.
But like I said, I still will be playing like this for my own giggles.

Have you considered setting up a 'campaign' using the succession wars board game, and perhaps some of the teams/clans as event fodder?
I think using the pug matches as your own single-player campaign is a great idea...
except I've only seen a few games where the enemy Ai was so... BAD

I don't really play the table top any more. If they had a full 3D version of MegaMek or something I might play my brother, but not with dice and paper. We both remember how slow it played out, and neither of us like how Mechwarrior Tactics is shaping up. In fact, I've not heard anything about MW Tactics in over a year, so is it vaporware?
However, I think the beauty of this system is that nobody would even have to know that you're running in a personal campaign. Granted, it may change your play habbits as you probably would care more about living, but you should try to survive anyway. However, I never plan to throw a game if I am among the last 2 or 3 guys left alive, or it is just me, just so I can keep my mech alive for the next fight. I'm not a jerk to my fellow players who want a win.
But, since we don't have community warfare yet, something like this can tide us over.
Or you could just use this thing to run a 12 man campain after Launch Module is added later this month.

I think it sounds just fine for a future game mode situation.
