Because the Shell does not penetrate the target, else the first hit would blow a hole throught your mech, instant killing you.

this leaves us with the only other option, the shell shatters on impact, which would make splash damage even quite fitting.

Or do you think the shells just "magicaly dissapear" on contact with armor?

Neg, as the armor is ablative, it simply blows the armor off. Also, science fiction.

EDIT for clarification. Firstly, holes in 'Mechs do not destroy the 'Mech. If they did, then it would kind of kill you if you lost an arm. As for your statement that the shell shatters on impact, if it did, the shrapnel would not retain enough energy to do actual damage to solid metal armor.

i see that some are annoyed by my statement to put it midly. probably we have a different definition of what the role of sniper/a sniper is.

in this game we do not have, or there are very few snipers. we have marksmans. there is a difference between them. all those poptarting mechs are not snipers. they are marksman (in an extended definition.)

the only weapon in this game for a true sniper is gauss. and if you play a true sniper role and take a dual gauss mech - then you will see that the game is not very friendly with you.

-most of the maps (alpine is decent but the color scheme is against sniping at the moment since you cant know when you drop on it to be able to change the camo on the mech) are too small and your position gets compromised very fast.
-you are not fast enough to be able to change positions immediately you get discovered and stay stealth and be able to contiune sniping..in most cases, by the time you do that your team is dead because they lack the firepower of a mech = yours. (probably more if the pugs are running around like headless chickens)
-the mechanic of the gauss..although not impossible to use, its not a by far friendly with a sniper. a much more better alternative and closer to original one in lore would be to change the mechanic to the one that when you fire gauss you will have a drain in power of the mech that makes you unable to fire any other weapon and maybe even move at a slower speed. for 2 gauss - implement this mechanic with a similar spike in drain power to the ghost heat.
- we do not have the guardian to provide us the stealth needed inside 180m if your position is compromised and give you the possibility to move in another spot unseen.
-there are a lot of weapons that will devastate a true sniper build from any range..which should not happen...at least not with so many different weapons that are able to do that at this moment.

in my opinion right now we do not have true snipers in the game (not as a role and very few as builds ).
