I personally have about 20ish mechs, and switch between them quite often (I don't even play much to begin with), so i don't really get bored. I just started trying a missile boat Orion, my very first missile boat since early beta, and it's pretty damn boring. If I'm looking to play serious, though I always fall back on my lovely Centurions.

I would say for some the hope of a win is the greater drive rather than their experience in a specific build. If your main goal us a win then you will simply use what gives you the best odds. For me I like the underdog challenge as a brawler. My builds are as heat efficient as possible with a slight sacrifice in alpha power.

They are all close range. I have 3 builds that are fun on any map but also give me a fighting chance to inflict serious damage without having to run weapons I don't care to use just to max my chances. I like to win. But the match where I got 9 kills 1000+ damage and we lost was the most fun I ever had.

Losing but out maneuvering 6 mechs to get the cored atlas in a Jenner is just as satisfying. Seeing how long I can last as a pug in a paper mache K2 is interesting because I have to think more tactical. Even running those same builds for about a year now doesn't get boring because mist of the interest is beyond just the mech itself

The fun is in the combat and tactics, the teamwork, learning and improving your game. All of that can be done with a single Mech armed with a single weapon. If one weapon would bore you, you're probably only playing at the shallowest level possible. The depth is where you make it, not in the gadgets.

This isn't a balance complaint (even though I just had the worst string of matches, personally, since I started playing--that was all my fault), but I'm honestly wondering how people don't get bored running the same builds they've been running for over a year. It's a rare event to see a match without at least one AC-40 or dual gauss Jag and a Phract 3D or holy god 1-4 DDCs.

Sure, there were a few people running more interesting builds (some of them really effectively, especially this one NARCing 3-L), but they're definitely in the minority.

So the question is, I suppose, for those of you running meta builds, or even just the same builds ad infinitum...how do you not get bored to tears running the same thing over and over?

I can't...I get bored. I'm guessing my KDR would be above 2.0 if I just ran my best mechs all the time but that gets boring. Some guys are fine with it though.

Why were guys using nothing but the M16a3 in Bf3? M4/AK/AWP in CS (if they aren't eco)?
Because those guns work. Guys like winning, and they will use whatever will make them win.

This is the exact reasons I did locusts, as my 1st mech :)

400 damge in a 3s Locust: check

over 500 damage and 6 kills in a 3m in one match: Check

Get a 3.00 kill ratio in locust 1v at one point: check

And boy were they fun!

As for builds, ask and I will share :(

There is just something about the A1 that never makes me bored should I choose to destroy some mechs. Be it raining death from afar, or legging people up close, or blasting some pesky Lights. I guess it is the high risk factor.

MWO itself though, got boring for me since March 2013.

Seriously, I run what works for me.

In CW, whenever it appears, are you guys that need to try out new mech buildsgoing to do so during matches that matter? I think not. You, too, will use what works and that may only be 4-7 mechs.

I played the same Atlas-D-DC fro 6 months, I am trying to find the right Battlemaster to play until I die or Trade it in 3068 for a Stone Rhino!

Congrats on the ball and chain, Joe. :)
That's to be saluted sir.

I run the same setups on my Dragons that I have since CB.
My Victors once I settled into setups that worked great for them, haven't changed.
Thunderbolts, my phoenix, 5SS, and my 9S are static setup.
My A1 I don't think is going to change anytime soon (since I bought it with the anticipation of the SRM fix.... LRM30 with SRM20 backup yes plz.. yes I could go to an SRM24 but then I'd run out of salvos in a really hot match..or I'd have to sack speed)

Jester isn't going to change anytime soon.
My Battlemasters won't be changing
my brand new Fatlas is still in flux. (I bought one yesterday, Half off!)
The Not Awesomes arent' going to change again... the mech is so terrible it doesn't matter WHAT you do to it. Small Lasers on an 8Q would likely perform just as well as a PPC and LL setup does. the PB MIGHT be worth something once SRMs get fixed. Not motivated to buy a 9M at all.

In STO my primary toon runs a similar setup in concept and execution to what he did since that game's launch. Just more refined obviously.

In online rp/system play I've had two characters running for 15 years.

Cars... I've loved the C4 Corvette since I was a kid.... bought one 3 years ago. And love it even more than I did as a kid. I might buy a C5 or a C7 down the line, but I'm never parting with the C4 vette.

I even still have my first Camaro, that I bought when I was 18 (so 11 years now) even though I put it in a tree. I take parts from it from time to time, to fix the Vette or my Second Camaro that I've now had for 10 years.

Had the same friends that I've had since I was a kid, and the same ones Online that I've had since I was a teenager.
(so almost 20 years for two of my friends, and 10 to 15 for others)
I'm 29 today heh.

Loyalty, that's what us mechwarrior fans have in common.

I have 79 mechs, and I look forward to leveling a new one as soon as I get the money for a new one, and I finish leveling my old ones. I have elited all of them and mastered quite a few, except the Locusts and the Firestarters. I am starting on the Banshee now . I am probably not going to finish the Locusts. They are too squishy for me. I still play some of my old mechs every now and then, but there are only a few that get much repeat business.
I only have the Griffins and Wolverines to go after I finish with the Banshee. I enjoy leveling the mechs and I am constantly tinkering with their loadouts. I don't see how someone could play the same mech over and over.

Edit: I have also not fully elited my Commandos and Quickdraws. I only kept two Commandos and one Quickdraw. They are some of my least favorite mechs besides the Locust.

Lots of people have more then 1 mech. If they get bored of one they role out another mec.

I don't play as much as I used to but still play daily. I'm not sure if it's because of boredom but I'm playing the harder mechs that is able to shine if I get lucky and play smart. Hunchbacks, wolverines, and dragons mostly. I'll throw in the death's knell and the AWS 9M once in awhile and Dragonslayer on rare occasion since I paid good money for that one.

I have 15 mechs that covers anything that may be needed in the chance that community warfare comes around and I do try out for a clan (corp?).

For many players, being killed by the enemy isn't fun.

The best way to avoid being killed by the enemy is to kill the enemy first.

The best way to kill the enemy first is with the best build you can run.

Yeah that's me! I kinda suck, so when i get a build I do well with I play it pretty heavy, because it's more fun for me to do well. And the more I play a build the better i get at it, so I end up not sucking so much. :(

Some mech builds you find just work for you and others may gribe "your build sux!". It sucks for for them, not you. I run the raven 4x near stock. My cats all have a build close to stock unless I decide to swap lrm sizes for more bang or faster engine.
