I guess I could downgrade a Commando 2D as well ... I never run it in standard mode.

Despite being a pretty exclusive light pilot, I don't own any Commandos. Worth the investment?

Yea! I run the 1B...Large Laser, Medium Laser, SRM 2. It's like the Ravens...what it can't catch it can hit with that Large (and rake that precious enemy Light's leg armor) And it's got a respectable loadout vs larger targets too. I really dig mine!

Comments:

CPLT-C1: I enjoy piloting this 'mech. Most of that's sentimental. Because of the jump jets, it's capable of doing fairly well in many cases. It isn't going to outperform the K2, on average, but I regularly bring out the C1 when the K2 seems like overkill. Heat's the largest downside, but it isn't as bad as the Blackjack 1 or the Jenner F. Once you're out of ammo, it functions as a reasonably effective tank for its weight, as long as you can keep your legs out of harm's way and remember to use your back armor. The missile boxes are difficult for the enemy not to hit, which is great once you're out of ammo.

CPLT-C4: I don't own one, but it seems more generally capable than the C1. The two smalls make it look undergunned, but SL are the most efficient Inner Sphere energy weapon at close range -- the best damage per heat. You will be in less of a bind when someone is inside your LRM minumum range than the C1 is. Even with two tons of ammo per LRM launcher, however, you've got to be careful with the salvos -- you only have eighteen. Choose the C4 over the C1 if you prefer sustainability (in terms of both heat & ammo) to raw firepower and versatility.

CN9-A: the armor on this variant is dangerously low, particularly worrisome for the right shoulder with the ammo. I would recommend the CN9-AL instead -- better armor, similar amount of firepower. However, that doesn't mean that the CN9-A is a bad choice; it looks capable enough, if a bit inferior to other options for the same weight.

BJ-1: unbearably hot, so little ammo that the AC2s are best saved for close-range emergencies (e.g. he's cored and you're too hot to use the lasers). Does have jump jets, but this makes the heat problem even worse. I own & pilot one, but I only recommend it for masochists. The BJ-1X is a better option -- even without the jump jets & AC2s, the better speed & heatsinks allow it to perform better in general, as long as one uses the MLs as the primary weapon system.

GRF-1N: I love these. Or, rather, my Raven 4X does; she eats them. TBH, you wouldn't catch me piloting one of these if it were the last 'mech in the Sphere; I hate being entirely defenseless once someone gets close to me.

Your results may differ. : )

Recommendation:

Consider a Raven 4X. This lovely little brawler is everything a stock T1 light ought to be, and it's refreshing to see this former underdog shine at last. Despite being slow for a light 'mech, this isn't among her few flaws; the firepower & jump jets make up for it. The only real drawback is the vulnerable legs -- a good gunner in a Hunchback 4G can leg you in four seconds and finish you in another eight, if you aren't careful to protect your legs by attacking with popup maneuvers. Do not pilot this Raven like a light 'mech; treat her like a medium 'mech with weak legs, and you'll do fine.

By the way, Carl, don't forget to scroll up on page 40 to see the combined video of the Epic Hill Rush of 2014. You mentioned wanting a link to that last night.

Yea...For speed and similar tonnage go with the Locust or Spider. But the Commando's strength is punching above his weight class. Stick next to the big guys and you'll be inconspicuous enough to fire freely for a good while.

I posted it to the front page of the MF:C site...truly epic.

Certainly can't argue too much with their price. Though it's definitely a mech I'd only use in stock matches. And while we're on that topic, we should start a convo somewhere with builds we're using in the PUG queue that still keep the single heat-sinks. We should probably have a support group to help each other through these most trying of times.

Haha...just bring a UAV, NARC, TAG and someone else bring a hero LRM boat. And trade off getting XP and Cbills, lol...

I rebuilt some 'mechs, and I'll have a BJ-1 and COM-2D do play around in next time we load up. I also rebuilt the CN9-A; it's another option to have in the stable.

I have 34 mechs right now, 11 are currently Stock. :P

And gauss rifles. Good lord, I don't think I'd have been able to get my Orion leveled to where it is without a gauss rifle.

Yes, thank you! I'll be watching these shortly. I was busy editing and re-editing my comments & recommendations for Malleus -- speaking of which, Malleus, you might want to review that, as I've added to it.

The unfortunate way we have to deal with "pgi balance™" A 1 PPC and 1 LRM build in MW4 could do damage within min range no matter what.

And in tabletop that Griffin could use kicks and punches instead of weapons at point blank range. I want my 11 damagepoint kick, darnit! Let's see those lights try to get too close _then_! :P

That said, I actually enjoyed using the GRF-1N and did fairly decently with it (usually ending up in the middle of the pack on my side as far as damage dealing went, and once even being the high scorer on my side, The first and last match I played were pitiful though. Something like 40 damage done only, and then I got bumrushed by Ravens and Hunchbacks and Wolverines, oh my! :P So, yeah, an MWO stock GRF-1N is a purebred supportmech. It _must_ have close-combat capable "bodyguards" or it will die horribly, but if left alone by the enemy it can cause considerable grief from a considerable distance.

Next time I think I'm gonna bring out a DRG-1N Dragon. I'm required by law as a Kuritan to use them every now and again, and I suspect in stock combat it could do a fair job.

That law is not in effect until this game gives us Panthers.

Great games last night! I had a lot of fun piloting a couple of 'mechs for the first time. A Wolverine 6R, Kintaro 18, and a couple of Locusts. The Awesome 8Q will have to wait for the next stock night. Sorry about taking the wrong Highlander. In my head the lower model number must be the lower tech version, right? When is the next T2 night? I love T1 but also have a lot of T2 stock 'mechs!

I'd love to try the Griffin 1N. I'd also love a checkbox that lets PPCs and LRMs work (even in a reduced fashion) under min range in private matches.

Carl, I've already got a Raven 4X - I have an alt account with Founders 'mechs, Ravens, and Phracts. There are stock 'mechs on it, but I've just never gotten around to using it on a stock night - but I have been driving the stock 4X in the general queue. It actually doesn't do badly at all.

Panthers would be awesome! I'd buy those right away! The original little mech with a Big Gun!

I'm really interested in this. I've still got a number of Phoenix 'Mechs I haven't bothered to upgrade, including all those Thunderbolts, Shadow Hawks, and i might as well bring my Lolcusts, but I'm actually considering either getting a Stalker 4N or 3H just for stock matches (both kick serius butt, but you really don't want to meet the 3H in a dark alley).

Also, concerning the Griffin 1N discussion, the 1N was designed as a pure breed fire support. If you want something that can offer a bit more felexibility I suggest using the 1S configuration which trades the PPC for a Large Laser and 2 Medium Lasers as well as downgrades the LRM10 to a LRM5 laucher and adds more heat sinks.
