With the recent AC/2 nerf and even before, there has been discussion on changing ranges of some weapons among the community. After looking over various weapons including in regard to a response directed to me here, I want to start this regarding all weapons.

CHANGING THE META
While looking weapons over, I have come to the belief that some weapons, notably Ballistics and ER Energy, having longer than TT ranges is partially contributing to the Sniper meta we have had for some time now. I do not want to take away Sniping but I would like to shorten the range it happens in, I think this will help cut down the effect of sniping and might give a boost to bringing back more Brawling.

In regard to shortening Sniping, I believe the following changes should happen:
  • Range of AC/5 should be 540
  • Max Range of AC/5 at 2x = 1080
  • Max Range of AC/10 at 2x = 900
  • Max Range of LB 10-X at 2x = 1080
  • Max Range of Ultra AC/5 at 2x = 1200
  • Max Range of Gauss at 2x = 1320
  • Range of ERPPC should be 690
  • Max Range of ERPPC at 2x = 1380
  • Range of ERLL should be 570
  • Max Range of ERLL at 2x = 1140
I also think the following weapons could be considered for range changes
  • Range of Flamer & SL = 100
  • Max Range of Flamer & SL = 200
SMALL BOOST TO SPL
I believe this change should happen because the bigger Pulse Weapons are slightly above their TT values.
The MPL is +20 over TT.
The LPL is +50 over TT.
So Range of SPL = +10 above SL and Max Range of SPL = +20 above SL.
The SPL is still hurting a bit, this would fit how the other Pulse Weapons have been boosted.

POSSIBLE ITEM FOR LRMs
Recently with complaints of the increased LRM speed plus a few opinions on what would happen with range reductions on Ballistics, I think it is time to institute a change on LRMs, not a speed change but something I thought of reading TT. I will explain.

In TT when a NARC is used, LRMs designed to work with it are range limited to only double the NARC range. In MWO terms using straight TT conversion, that would mean a Range of 540m keeping the 180m minimum. Now I am not sure if this could be in MWO or if NARC even needs it.

However, what if this range penalty could be applied to LRMs another way, perhaps to Artemis equipped Mechs? From what I see in the UI, when you add Artemis to a Mech, the listings for LRMs and ammo change so it looks like Artemis systems are separate from standard. I also see this under my inventory for Weapon Systems, right now I have separate listing for Artemis and non-Artemis Missile Launchers. Perhaps Artemis launchers could have a range reduction to something between TT NARC and standard LRM range, say 770m keeping the 180m minimum. This would mean LRM boats using multiple launchers with Artemis have to get a couple hundred meters closer even for indirect fire.

Easiest way to change the meta would be to change the ranges back to TT values, and remove the extra range, period.

Small maps are suddenly larger, and large maps become huge.

Then most combat happens within 300 meters, just like it does in the lore.

If you divide the ranges I list for Ballistics and Energy by 30m to get equivalent TT hexes, you will see that is what I did though not so much to make everything pure TT, more to change things based on the AC/2 range reduction and possibly change the meta.
Max Range in MWO is TT Extreme Range roughly.
