I wonder how to properly react to insults and wanted to ask you what I should do when I see them.
You know, I can handle insults very poorly. I know that I should ignore them, but I can't. I don't mind cursing or general swearing, since they are born from frustration. But insults, even those that come from frustration, are by their very nature intended to hurt people, and I can't stand playing with people who want to hurt other people.
So what should I do?
In an ideal game I would put him on a block list and move on. For reasons I don't know PGI never implemented a block list, so this is not an option.
Telling them to stop insulting is not going to work. I know it is hard to believe, but they often actually think that they are doing the people they are insulting a favor. At least that is what they gave me as an answer sometimes.
What would give me, personally, most satisfaction would be teamkilling the offender. And with it I mean teamkilling: Rarely I have seen insults directed at the enemy team, it is always their own team.
Well, teamkilling is a breach of the code of conduct and I agreed to the code of conduct. So I won't, no matter how much I want.
Since insulting in itself is violating the code of conduct, I could report the offenders to the support. And I am very tempted to do exacty this. I guess this would mean making screenshots, cutting them and mail them to the support. But I wonder if this is worth the effort for several reasons:
- Will there be any reaction to it? PGI is not exacly known for good customer relationship and communication.
- In this game, what is even considered an insult? I mean, maybe the game is a world where real life insults (at least where I live) are considered normal conversation in-game. I will give you an example: A common insult is the phrase "F..n r..rd". Now, this is intended as an insult directed at a player, and because being called mentally disabled is meant to be an insult, it is also an insult to all people with mental disability. Since those people are are no more responsible for their condition than people who are born with, like, their skin colour, it means that this insult was at least equivalent with racism. But, while possible, I don't want to believe that there are so many people who are as bad as open racists among the players, I have to question my own view what is actually an insult here.
- The numbers of insults encountered seems to fluctuate with the time of day, which probably means that the continent the players live in seems to play a role, which in turn might be another indicator that what is considered acceptable may vary.
- When (if) VOIP will be integrated in the game, reporting insults will become an impossibility. Unless PGI records every conversation there will be no way to associate an insult given with an account, even if I would record this whole thing. Besides that, the threshold before a player will start insulting will be lowered considerably since he will not have to type anymore.
So does this mean every reporting I do now will become obsolete soon anyway?
And no, I don't think I will ever use ingame VOIP. But I will give it a try.
- It could mean I have to report up to three persons each evening. I wonder if I will be eventually considered a troublemaker.
Even if I report, should I do it silently or mention it in-game?
So what should I do?
Even though I am very disappointed with the state of the game right now, I have never completely stopped playing. I am not a ragequitter. But while I can handle bad game mechanics, real people's insults are another matter. For many months the amount of insults was on an acceptable level, and maybe it is just me, but in the last months things seem to have become worse.
I want to do something so that I won't have do stop playing altogether eventually.

I know people who deliberately teamkilled teammates to try and get banned from the game. It took PGI several weeks before they finally banned them. Thats how long PGI takes to ban a deliberate tker.
I also bumped into a cancerous ex-forum mod on my team who immediately started to trashtalk and strip all my weapons off my mech. Hes still playing today.
In other words, reporting seems to have next to no effect.

I have yet to see or hear any kind of confirmation about potential rule breakers getting punished for their transgressions.
*Waits for a mod to come in and say a lot of important words of consolidation and encouragement*
Unless we get an actual e-mail from PGI or a message here on the forums I don't see a reason why I should bother reporting anyone for any kind of rule break. As for me, I am scum and will teamkill, teambleed or rip any number of parts off if I feel it is serving my own sense of justice. This may be wrong but doing the right thing gets you killed, takes away your match earnings and lowers your K/D. (if that is your poison)

If you are talking about the chat text in game, take a screen shot and send it and send it in. Whenever I have submitted something to PGI there has always been some sort of acknowledgement or follow up. Make sure you note the mode, map, day and time of the drop as well as the name of the offender. They might not be able to do anything off just one report but it could also be that your report is the one that puts them over the top and lets them address the offender.
Something you can do to minimise your exposure is to exit the game as soon as you get the option at the end of the match. Don't sit there and read what's being posted. If you want to look at your stats really quick I say do it, they will keep your attention but as soon as you are done just hit the big eject button and again don't read the chats. If you keep dropping with the same people every time you drop try waiting for a minute once you are out of game before you load up for another, let the player pool change so there are new people.
If it's during the game and you are watching for orders from the unit commander there isn't a lot I can offer except maybe watch of the icons on the map and follow the herd. I have noticed that there aren't a whole lot of people who scan the distance while the group is moving but maybe if you did you might see that scout looking at your team and you can report it or attack it. either way your attention isn't on the chat any more and is focused on the game.
One other thing I might suggest is finding a player/family friendly group to drop with. This is in no way an insinuation they are are soft or weak or a QQ'er but rather it is an option you might not have thought of. There are units out there who have a personal code where members of the unit adhere to a policy of being good guys, not using profanity and generally keeping everything at a PG 13 level. One such unit is the Seraphim and I know for a fact that they would be willing to talk with you before hand to see if you would be a good fit with their style of play. They are a really good bunch of guys, have a website, have their own voip but also access to other voip servers. They cover the gambit from casual drops just for fun and solid 12 man drops. Anyways, I don't want to steal their thunder so I leave it up to you. You can find them in the faction section of the forums. (I know they ave posted in the Marik Page but they are a Merc unit and have no hard affiliation)
Not telling you what you have to do, just offering a few suggestions. I do hope your experience gets better in game.

Do what I do, just laugh at the children trying to look cool to internet strangers. Toy with them, wind them up.
Don't take anything they say to heart, remember 8 times out of 10 they wouldn't dare say it to your face, 1.5/10 would say it and get punched in the throat and the last 0.5/10 are likely 300lbs of beef and roid rage so just let them think they're cool in case the flip out (roiders are like the Sun - they're big, orange and you never stare directly at them!).

Closed, as some still don't seem to have gotten the message, that attempts to disclaim that support is doing nothing are a way of advertising rule breaking. There will always be one who believes in fictional or anecdotal evidence and will try it for themself.
Support is banning people for all kinds of rule violations, including language. I don't care if you believe it or not. Even though I do have evidence for that, I am not allowed to share it with you. You might want to claim it as anecdotal/fictional as those of other users.
The notes I see look like this (I hope I am allowed to showcase at least this much):
Want to guess what comes after a suspension?
If you do not believe support is doing anything, everyone and their mom would by now run around teamkilling and insulting other players while openly advertising aimbots. If support indeed did nothing, all those self proclaimed banned players over at the star citizen forums wouldn't have been banned (some actually are not, but how could they play the victim in such a case).
You do not need screenshots to report a player for language (or anything else) to support. It will only make the job easier for the GMs. Player name, map played, date, time and timezone, together with the type of infringement are absolutly enough for a report.
