You have the game downloaded and patched I'm guessing?

At the moment, being new to the game and all, you are broke. You have to use the trial mechs (which should appear in the ingame mechlab for you when you click "select mech"). The trial mechs aren't all that bad, but you can't change them.

If you haven't already, there is a free 1 day of premium time all players can get for free (once). I'll leave the exact location on where and how to get this to someone better informed than I am on that subject. However, try to get it soon and activate it before you do any serious heavy play yet. The reason is...

Your first 25 matchs you get a boost to your income called a "cadet bonus". This is to help you get into the game with a decent mech and maybe some customs on it. Don't spend this too quickly. Learn the game with the trial mechs for a little while and see what mech/set up of the trial mechs you seem to like best. (Or if you already know a play style you are interested in, describe it and many of us on the forums can help guide you to a mech/loadout custom that might be helpful.) This 25 match cadet bonus can get the 50% boost from the premium time, making it so you can earn a decent sum of c-bills (ingame money). Personally, I'd suggest making your first day of MWO a planned event. Get the game all downloaded. Then, activate your free 1 day premium and play your 25 (or whatever the Cadet bonus number is) in a single day. Will get you off to the max benefit you can get for a nice start.

If you want any other advice, feel free to ask. Best advice I can give you right now is to take a good look at Smurfy (an out of game mechlab so you don't have to spend c-bills to see if a build will even work). Once you figure out how to play the game and what each weapon roughly does, Smurfy will become your best friend.

An example of the power of Smurfy:
This is my Stalker 3F I basically pilot in the game. I own this mech, and it preforms well for me. It's well rounded between long range and short range. (Note: LRMs have a minimum range of 180m. Inside that range, they do 0 damage. Which is why I have the other, closer, ranged weapons as well.)
This is my Griffin 3M, which I have found to be a good ride so far. It's fast, mobile, and has a lot of utility. Might not be a mech for everyone, but I find it to be a good, friendly mech to use. Shoot LRMs from 700m-180m. Shoot all other weapons within 270m and closer.
This is my Hunchback 4SP. Notice I like my LRMs? They aren't for everyone, but I like them... This was also the first mech I owned in MWO, and I still occasionally use it to this day.
LRMs not your thing? Here's a Battlemaster 1G I use. It will be expensive, and I find it not as friendly as my other mechs, but it's not bad if you like your lasers. Just, try not to use your ER Large Lasers with your close range weapons, or you overheat fast.

The point is, thanks to Smurfy, I could show you dozens of builds I use. Check out Smurfy before you buy any mechs yourself. Ask for advice if you need it. People are very helpful on the forums. (And if you see a post from Koniving, listen to him. He's filled with great tips and accurate advice and information.)

Otherwise. Go play. Have fun. (And run the tutorial for the basics of mech operation.)

The download page is different now. It appears it's only a 2 hr block of premium time now :D

To the OP,
First, did you download the patcher and run it? The game itself is approx. 4 GB. It is NOT a browser-based game. Click the blue Download Now button after you have logged in to this site.

Once in game, there are tabs across the top and submenus along the left. Mechlab is the second tab on top. As Tensunie mentioned, you have to first earn cbills by using only the 4 trial mechs available to you. Once you have enough cbills, you can go to the store to buy mechs, or (better) is to go to the mech lab, click the top filter in the main screen to say "owned" to "purchaseable." This will show all mechs you can buy. The top ones listed are MC only, but scroll down and you'll get to the cbill ones. Also, you can click on a mech and click the blue "Mech details" on the bottom rightish to see the hardpoints and default layout. Alternatively, (and clearer) is http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/

Welcome to Mechwarrior Online! I'm Koniving; among several others here I linger around the new player help thread to help new pilots get into the game.

Have you downloaded the game? If not click here which will allow you to download the patcher and begin installing the game.

As soon as you finish that download or if you have already, click here for instructions that will help you get started. It has pictures and walks you through how to patch (as in fully download) and start the game, get into the tutorials and testing grounds and join a match.

After you get finished with that you should have had a chance to play a match and try out the tutorial and testing grounds. Return here at that time and read the other responses here.

(Oh god.. I sound like a moderator now. :D )

Welcome to the game. Just to say a few more things, Koniving is really helpful in the forums. Definitely one to ask if you have questions on the game. Also, try the trials and see what you like in them, the trials will change in April 29th too so look forward to that, along with the launch module, which basically gives and adds more balancing and private matches to the game. Once you've picked up your first mech, remember you need 3 variants to master a chassis, and champions and heroes require MC or real life money. Champions give 10% XP bonus and are same as the C-bill variants (count the same as C-bill variants in mastering). Heroes give 30% C-bill bonus. Remember C-bills are in game money and MC are real life money, GXP is used for general pilot tree skills and modules, while MXP are used for mech specific variant experience to unlock effienciency boosts and master the mech used, which I mentioned earlier. Hope I helped. :D

May your reactor stay cold, and your lasers be hot, and may all the enemy NARC beacons slide off like snot.

Welcome Jazz! Hope you enjoy the game (when you find your mech lab). Lots of people here are pretty clued up about the game (especially Koniving) so don't be afraid to ask!

And remember, the only stupid question is the one you never ask :D

Unless of course you ask the one where babies come from.

Please don't ask that question.

EDIT: Typo.

Save all your money for your first mech. Good one to look at are Cataphract 3D for a heavy. Victor for an assault, Shadow hawk for a medium. There are others of course but all of these are solid mechs. After buying the mech get endo steel and double heat sinks. That's about 2 million C bucks. A good hero is the Muromets (sp) for the C bill boost but it is real money so only buy it when it goes on sale. There is usually a sale running from Fri to Mon on something. Eventually all the hero's will be in some sort of sale so wait for them. Get on team speak and join up with others to help you grind. Have fun.

Welcome, Jazz Star! If you've followed Koniving's advice and have the game installed, you'll notice that if you click on 'Mechlab' and then 'Select mech' it will open up a grid of battle machines.

On the left hand side, click on 'Trial.' The game has a rotating cast of 4 mechs (1 light, 1 medium, 1 heavy and 1 assault) that you can play around in to earn cash as a beginner. You don't get experience on these mechs, and you can't change their loadout, but you can use them to get started.

Posted Image

Your first 25 games will earn you a GIANT C-Bill bonus, at the end of which you'll have around 9 - 10 million cbills. Use them wisely! Play around with each of the trial mechs to get a feel for what you like before making your first purchase

Once you DO purchase your own mech, you can upgrade it's equipment and weapons in the mechlab.

Please feel free to come to the New Player forums at any time to ask questions or for help! You'll find that the responses here are generally VERY helpful and the people are pretty cool.

Best,
Ghost Badger

Nothing to add really, other than welcome to MWO. If I see you on the battlefield, I'll try to keep you safe if you're on my team. If not . . . well, sorry I guess.

Welcome to MW:O Jazz, Big piece of advice (pretty sure been repeated now) save your cadet bonus from your first 25 matches, it totals up to about 10 Million C-bills. After you collect all of it, and you have tried out the trial mechs, and figured out a style you like, we can help you pick your starting mech.

Don't be afraid to post more questions here, we're happy to help you step by step. I will also mirror Mailin's sentiments, if you're on my team, I'll help you, if you're on the enemy team, well, good luck.

If he is on the other team - at least we know he is a lower priority target (for now) :P

Welcome to the game Jazz.
