Is there a trick to making the MG's more effective? I was running a set of six on a Jager build, along with a couple of large lasers, and they never really seemed to do much of any damage. Just made an awesome noise.

The trick to using MGs, at least in my experience, is to use heavy weapons to break open armor and then use MGs on the opened internals. Of course you can/should still fire MGs at sealed armor, but don't expect them to do much.

I like to spam them in the opponent's face while focusing my lasers on soft spot.....amazing how many "L33Ts" even flinch from that. Then as soon as the armor cracks, MGs get inserted.

I haven't really used AC20s recently, so I'd have to say UAC5s. The dakka is glorious.

You have to pretent they are lasers. They use the same hitscan method, and those bullets you see are just visuals. They have 2x range, so 0 damage at 240, down from .1 damage at 120m; very close range.

Probably UAC5. Burst damage with good range. AC5 ROF feels so anemic after using UAC5, and you come to appreciate the UAC5's ability to burst after you realize that there are so many times when you only have a brief window of time to send lead downrange.

AC10 is decent, but given that only 2 more tons gets you the AC20, the AC10 is only used when critical slots are a limiting factor. Then the question becomes: why are you piloting a 'mech where critical slots are a factor?

I want to love the AC2, but throughout MWO it has had an abysmal heat to damage ratio for its tonnage. It used to have a very high DPS going for it. I don't mind the range nerfs to the AC2, but I don't think it needed a DPS nerf.

The AC2 saw a large range nerf, so the AC5 now does more damage per shot at all ranges, and equal dps, while running cooler and being much friendlier to single-shot engagements.

MGs do crap against armor, but their damage is greatly amplified against internals. I like to use them to annoy enemies who have armor everywhere, while popping weak points (or important ones) with my lasers, ACs, or other higher-damage weapons. Once the armor is opened I shift the MGs to focus on that section until it gets torn up.

A few notes: MGs are hitscan cones, so aim them like lasers and try to center the reticule on the target area. Also, they fire pretty quickly but come with a bunch of ammo. I tend to run with 1 ton per 1-2 MGs.

It's hard to pick a favorite so here's the combos i like. I like the shotgun of dual lbx on my k2 with the lbx range module. I also like the twin ac 20s for that assult-turned-the-wrong-corner moment. Mixing one ac 20 and lbx makes a good mech killer too.

My favorite ballistic is the machine gun because it hasn't been nerfed (YET).

LB-10X, the low heat and decent weight are a perfect blend for my gaming style. Only issue is how many c-bills they cost :/

I'll never touch a LBX or MGs.

Aside of that, i only use one AC2 on a very specific build that absolutely needs it.
Have one AC10 in use (because the AC20 is the better option in most cases).
One double Gauss Jager.
AC20, AC5, UAC5? Well every single mech i own uses ballistic weapons, and my ballistic weapon to mech ratio is probably something like 2. I slap as many ACs as possible on any mech , and if a mech can't mount ballistics, i won't buy it.
My favorite (not the best, but favorit) is the AC20.

then you sir, are missing out, and letting the rather set in stone opinions of the "L33Ts" blind you to much fun.

Since switching my JM6-DD to 2 LBX, 4 MG, 2 MLasers and a 295 XL, I've turned in a 10/1 KDr, 2.5/1 W/L and a match average of 635 points. All using MetaOverlord scorned weaponry.

AND LOVING EVERY SECOND OF IT.

(and I'm reasonably sure it isn't cuz of the medium lasers......... )

Teach me this magic, wise one! I have tried LBXs on my K2 and consistently regretted it. Perhaps it's worth another try? What strategy are you using?

High speed, driving it like a Medium, engage, retreat, re-engage. And I think the 4 MG make a HUGE impact once the armor cracks. You can ask MischiefSC, he's started running it too, and is reporting great success.

At first it was AC/20s and Gauss, then just AC/20s, then AC/2s, and now.... machineguns.

DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA!

I like AC/5s and AC/10s, both for different situations. Dual AC/5s for fire support in my BJ-1, dual AC/10s for brawling in my CPLT-K2. AC/20 I'm not really a fan of, massive burst damage isn't really my thing. Low RoF and ammo per ton...meh. I can see how other people like it though. AC/2, gauss, and MGs I haven't really used, but might experiment with in the future.

The AC/2 nerf might have been to gather data to be used for adjusting the rest of the autocannons.

My favorite is probably the A/C5. Good range, good damage, and overall very versatile.

Close runners up:

A/C20: +Awesome damage - short range -slow projectile speed
Gauss Rifle: +High damage +High Projectile Speed +/-Hard mode style mechanics

My 2 favourites are the AC/20 and triple AC/5s. The first is absolutely deadly at close range, especially when backed up by 4 medium lasers that have the exact same range. The second is like having a Gauss rifle without any charge-up that fires 3 times as fast and can switch to chain-fire for continuous enemy screen-shake and intimidation.
