Ok so a week or so ago, I reinstalled MWO to get the free mech w/bay. Played my matches, everything seemed fine. Turned off my cpu. The next time I turn it on, windows won't load. Boot sector problems. I do all the repairs with my windows disk, figured it was just some fluke thing.

Then later during that session I start playing MWO again, and Blue Screen mid match. Now I have to run all the repairs again to start windows. I get it going, start MWO again, launch a game. Blue Screen before I get into the match. Now I do all the repairs, get windows up. Uninstall MWO. Everything is smooth for a week or so.

Yesterday I re-installed MWO. Played some testing grounds, seemed fine. But then I turn off my cpu. Turn it back on today, windows won't load. Do all the repairs, still won't load. After a few attempts, I try safe mode. Safe mode loads, so I uninstall MWO. Now windows will load.

I'm not sure what to do from here. Where do I even start? Love the game. Want to play it. Can't seem to.

Could be corruption issues. Maybe your hard disk has bad sectors or faulty ram ?
You might want to do some checks.

I ran a mem test and it came back clean on the ram. Not sure about the disk. I have a ssd and a hdd, i've installed MWO on each and ran into the same problem. So I don't think it's MWO itself but something MWO works with. Direct x was mentioned to me in team chat, not sure how to check that out just yet.

ok I will assume you are using the ssd as the boot drive. If that is so then if you have an extra drive try ghosting the ssd to the other drive and replacing the ssd(or boot drive). (yeah i know it is slower but you are testing to see if the ssd (boot drive) is defective) boot and play restart and see if mwo is causing the problem or not if not then the drive is bad. This can also be caused by the MB going bad or bad ram.

To me this sounds as if the SSD is having intermittant issues as this is the same behavuior that a hard disk has just prior to failing.

I know you said

so I uninstall MWO. Now windows will load.

But it may be a case of the "sugar pill" working. Better to test it fully with a componet swap.

A quick search shows several makes of SSD having Boot sector problems.

(BSD = Blue Screen of Death, a windows "feature" where when windows has an unrecoverable crash it will only display a blue screen with esoteric crash information on it)

Edit: oh....um...yeah you got me on that one, my sarcasm detector must have broken.LOL

MWO can't crash your Windows.
There must be a hardware deffect or corrupted windows files.
The reason why you get BSOD may be overheating your CPU.
Check the temps. while playing with CoreTemp.

I will try that thank you. Sent the blue screen pics to support but i'm also leaning towards bad ssd right now.

The mode of failure for SSDs has been, in my experience, catastrophic destruction. The one bad SSD I had wouldn't power on, and furthermore, the computer wouldn't power on with the SSD plugged in.

Almost all modern hard drives and SSDs have an onboard processor that will monitor the drive for failures. That's called S.M.A.R.T. You can query that controller with http://sourceforge.n.../smartmontools/

I warn you that some manufacturers have their own idea of what SMART data means. If a failure count is high (in the billions) it is probably a count of how long it's been since the last one.

Also, BSD is the common name for Berkeley Software Distribution, an operating system for hardcore folks. The windows failure is more commonly called the BSoD.

Sorry, BSoD! Found the S.M.A.R.T., it doesn't give me a way to copy it though, each status shows an OK at the end.

Support wants the crash files but i've uninstalled the game so I don't have them available to assist them. We'll see.

I ran a firmware update on my ssd. Then reinstalled MWO. I had been running mech on dx9. This time I set it to dx11. I've restarted my cpu and MWO a few times and haven't been able to repeat the problem. Hopefully it's solved.
