Well, yes. I'm pretty sure that is 100% the purpose of fan videos.

I'm not coming down on the video, lol. It was fantastically done. Unfortunately for PGI, it also highlights a bunch of assaults (3/3/3/3 kills that), a combined team of 24 working together (has NEVER been in game) and a wonderful view of the old UI which, ironically, shows better visual functionality of what's on your mech than UI 2.0 actually has.

All that pretty video, useless for PGI, because it shows a game they can't, won't, or didn't code.

I dunno. Figure it out. You can't expect every unit to be popular at the same time. It's the ones that find an answer to that question that earn a slice of the people pie. You already know what ours was.

And while I'm not generally a fan of seeing 6 guys all say "Join X, we're friggin' awesome" at the start of a match, I understand that it's one of a very few options, and an easy one at that. So, if that's the way THEY found, don't come down on them for it.

Eh. It's not just PUGs. I'm a unit leader and I find that sort of advertising extremely tacky.

Every unit wants to be a household name, but most don't do anything to stand out from the crowd but spam the ever-living **** out of everything in an attempt to, I dunno, get their name stuck in someone's head I guess. Whether it's an avalanche of garish signatures, constant advertisement in the game chat, or spamming of the Outreach forums, these units end up merging into one big echo chamber for anyone who isn't already drinking their koolaid. No shit it gets annoying after a while =/.

We decided to go a different route. You know, actually do something to make ourselves known rather than spam until people couldn't get our name out of their heads? We're The Other Guys With The Videos. You know, the ones whose videographer was hired by IGP to produce their official launch trailer.

I don't think I've ever seen a forum thread complaining about too many fan videos.

So your claim to fame is being a combat videographer unit?? ;) Sorry I had to tease that a little.

As to the Fan videos... Can players watch em from the game? :D Are they reaching your target audience? Not all players come to the forum don't forget.

Well, since PGI consistently tells us that only a TINY fraction of their playerbase actually pays attention to the damned forums...what would you have units do? Hold a corner barbeque? Try hosting a carwash in thongs?

There's no shame in letting people know you're recruiting in-game...since IN-GAME is likely the only place they'll ever see the name.
That CANNOT be unseen *Shudder*

Alot of great responses out there... My main are:
  • I don't have time to wait around to find teams
  • I have kids, a wife and a job like most of my friends so organizing 4 buddies is like pulling teeth and becomes more exhausting than fun
  • Having to jump from TS3 to Vent to whatever server is annoying (plus if I wanted to listen to ******* all day, I would turn on the Liberal Media) **A good INGAME voip would help some with this issue.... *HINT*
  • Sometimes I want to run in the middle of a match and just shoot ****. Tactics are great, but sometimes you go with your gut and let your balls hang out.
  • Been playing MW for years (since '95), official leagues and all (Star League, HardCore, etc..), and honestly, I got more important stuff to do then practice 3-5 times a week and add another appointment on my already swamped schedule.
All of that aside, I love pugging and even buddying up once a while (only by chance). But pugging is my favorite because I feel (IMO) that more random acts of awesome happen in them. (ie. A Spider 5D taking out 3 assaults over a 5 minute period under 200m and so forth). I started this game playing with buddies (all Founders) but over time patches and CW encouraged them to leave. As for me, I want to complete my initial goal of mastering out all mechs and building great builds.

One Side Point: With all that being said, I DO NOT preach against joining teams. To those who team up, more power to you!

That would still be more manly than the Quickdraw. It's totally post-op.

It just comes off as lazy to me, and I certainly understand why it would drive solo players absolutely nuts. In their minds, it's not one unit doing that - it's one hundred. They can't tell the difference between a team that advertises once a day and a team that advertises 5 times a match, because to them it's all just noise - shrill, annoying nails on chalkboard noise.

Ha. Well, we also placed top 5 NA in the last season of RHOD, but I'd estimate at least 60-70% of our recruitment comes from the videos, the rest being mainly word of mouth. Almost everyone who joins at least mentions them. We don't hit Shieldwall membership numbers, but that's not really an ideal for us anyways. We get the level of exposure that we want without having to type a single word into game chat or spam threads like these with our calling card. I'd call that a successful method of advertisement.

Not to the guy who gets rejected?

Our standards for players are more conduct oriented. We believe we can train people to become better pilots if they wish it to be so. (In fact during the stage after sibkin, we actively encourage people to take mentors to train to become better, as often they will need it to pass their Trial of Position).

As far as elitist? No, though we do not tolerate people with terrible attitudes that talk trash to others. If you cannot be respectful and play the game in such a manner, then you are not a good fit for us...go find a unit that likes to talk trash like some of the groups that have gone so far as to name themselves with troll-ish names.

Ok, time for me to post here. I used to be a PuG, I mostly pug'd as I didn't really know anyone in RL other than myself playing it so just solo dropped.

That said, really people, find a group to join. I just joined up with HHoD (A Davion group) and though they do the whole "Military" thing (To call out things like saying Hostiles in Echo 3, instead of "Hey, there a bunch of guys shootin at me over there" and they do use a Mechwarrior ranking style, but really its just for unit coherency and a little RP I'd think). The gameplay didn't change, actually it was more fun, as now I had someone to chat with (We use TS3) and to co-ordinate with for a little strategy. Still we won and lost matches, can't be helped, but it was fun.

So, find a group, if you associate your avatar with a particular house (Davion, Steiner, Liao, etc.) Check the forums, find a group of players that fit your play style and time you have available to play. Trust me, you'll have more fun, as a little teamwork really helps out, and the thanks you recieve from saving a teammate (I did last night) makes being in a team worthwhile when you hear "Thanks for the save".

the OP is sayin joining a team would solve the 5-11 man problem, (the problem I am having)

so i am explaining to him why im not joining teamspeak with my 4 friends.

i do drop solo when i have time for 1-2 game, but most time we drop 4 and wanna drop 5-6 (most time we're 5)

we cant join TS since we speak french and are close real life friend... (we talk about lots of thing, not MWO related)

The 228 IBR has two French speaking players that could translate. I'm sure there are a few french groups out there that are starving for members. Like the OP stated, there is a group for EVERYONE.
