Well, technically I'm still on a team. I haven't jumped in teamspeak or grouped up in the two weeks or so that I've been casually playing matches since I came back from a long break.

Know why?
Because my experience with MWO is that grouping makes me care about the game, and caring about this game is like being in love with an unfaithful girlfriend.

That's why I just pug a few games solo and then do something else.

What would really help in this team/no team debate would be if PGI introduced a built in voice comms system which could be switched on/off - just like Warhammer 40000 does.

Come on PGI - surely it's not too much to ask.

Technically i was or "i am" on {QQ} i badly wanted to find a team/unit as you said and play competitive but that was like when 3Fs were the meta, shortly after that it was all poptarting and lost all motivation to play the game beside casual 12 mans and pugs on my meta3d just because... now i barely play anymore.

I was in a unit for years back in NBT, I enjoyed it for the most part. I've mostly pugged in MWO although I've had the pleasure of dropping with old friends from time to time.
Now, however I play just for fun, and my game times are all over the place, for instance today Mwo at 11am GMT, last games I played 2.30am GMT 3 days ago, I may play more later today but I gotta work so I'm not likley to be back on till about 11pmGMT on monday.
And as for the PUG-bashing,, I've been in and seen some amazingly effective pug teams, no voicecom, very little chat but 12 strangers working together and winning.
You don't HAVE to be in a unit to enjoy your game

This right here is the biggest problem.

PGI hasn't done a damn thing to make the game a social experience and has completely relied on the passion and hard work of the community to organize itself outside of the game.

Some of us have been playing for over 2 years now and they STILL don't have a proper tutorial? How long did it take them to actually have ANYTHING in game that told the player about ghost heat?!

We literally have what seems like a team of forum users scanning the new player section every day to help get people into the game and understand what is happening, because there is no other way for them to learn it!

PGI owes so much to the battletech fan base and their devotion, because if this game wasn't called Mechwarrior it would have been shutdown a looonnng time ago, if they could have gotten it started at all.

The player base hasn't helped either Roughneck. Do you remember how prolific recruiting used to be? You could not drop without seeing a "ad" for This that or the other Unit.

The PUGs whined, "We don't like groups, stop bragging!"

Seriously? :)

Only dumb units would recruit in game. "We just stomped your ass, come join our unit!" terrible sales pitch and gives a bad rep to groups.

But serisouly? The player base hasn't helped? What about smurfy? What about the plethora of player made guides? Player run Leagues? Units?

The amount of basic things that should be in this game that the community has had to fill in is pretty appalling.

Well... Yeah at the end of the Match... However We have extended a hand to opponents that showed aptitude in one form or another. I know I wasn't recruited for my Mad gaming skillz!

The PUG players cried and cried that Its insulting that Murphy's Law "Spams" at the beginning of the match they are recruiting.

That Plethora of guides had been created by a small portion of players. A mere handful of good people.

So, smurfy? The leagues? The live streams? NGNG?

None of this makes a difference in your eyes? These players contributions are pointless?

Pointless not. Overshadowed... Yes.

That's the thing about an Opinion Roughneck. Everybody is not forced to agree with it.

The ones who don't want to be known if they LOSE announce only at the end...the ones who are confident in their abilities and/or realize that you don't win every game announces at the start.

We used to do both ghost.
Beginning: We're looking for a few good Men and women.

End: This victory brought to you by Murphy's Law (IF we were the top scoring players ;) )

Eh. It's not just PUGs. I'm a unit leader and I find that sort of advertising extremely tacky.

Every unit wants to be a household name, but most don't do anything to stand out from the crowd but spam the ever-living **** out of everything in an attempt to, I dunno, get their name stuck in someone's head I guess. Whether it's an avalanche of garish signatures, constant advertisement in the game chat, or spamming of the Outreach forums, these units end up merging into one big echo chamber for anyone who isn't already drinking their koolaid. No shit it gets annoying after a while =/.

We decided to go a different route. You know, actually do something to make ourselves known rather than spam until people couldn't get our name out of their heads? We're The Other Guys With The Videos. You know, the ones whose videographer was hired by IGP to produce their official launch trailer.

I don't think I've ever seen a forum thread complaining about too many fan videos.

I always amused when someone responds with "No one wants to join your clan" or "You suck!" and half the time they're on our team.

It just means at the end I can say "This win brought to you by the Kell Hounds. It was a pleasure carrying you guys who so badly wanted to troll us." Granted, we rarely advertise...with no CW or persistent reason to keep on grinding...why get the kids excited about nothing?

You mean the video that made the game appear WAY cooler than it actually is? Lol. I remember seeing the scene with all 24 mechs heroically charging down the hill, firing into the distance and thought "That looks really cool. It's a shame that no game EVER looks like that. They're setting up new players with really high expectations."

Well, since PGI consistently tells us that only a TINY fraction of their playerbase actually pays attention to the damned forums...what would you have units do? Hold a corner barbeque? Try hosting a carwash in thongs?

There's no shame in letting people know you're recruiting in-game...since IN-GAME is likely the only place they'll ever see the name.

Just might work.

I dunno. Figure it out. You can't expect every unit to be popular at the same time. It's the ones that find an answer to that question that earn a slice of the people pie. You already know what ours was.
