Good news everyone! The team may have figured out what the issue was. They are now working to put the build together and put it through testing. Our goal is to try to get this fix in time for the next patch. We apologize for this additional time spent with old matchmaking rules in place: We are all too eager to bring the Rule of Three's online to see more balanced matches.

Update: Seems I jumped the gun on the good news and we are back to the workshop on that fix. This one may take longer than the next immediate patch. We will continue to keep you informed as the situation unfolds.

Is this an issue of not having enough testers run through various different testing cases, or is it because there's a difference between the Test and Production environments? Curious because this type of issue seems to come up sometimes.

I'd say it's both at the same time in this case.

Hey Mischief,, seems that it wasnt an Oil change, seems they misplaced the Engine, gearbox and Diff. You see some of us have the Experience that when someone tells us its an oil change thats needed and we see the engine sitting on the ground we sort of know beter.
Fixes that require players to Edit game files sooo totally professional.
Going thru life with such low expectations, life must be full for you.

No, I'm good. Instead of waiting for the UI update they let me make the changes I want in cfg now - very happy with that.

3/3/3/3 is worth waiting for.

Private matches are incredible.

Better than the last dozen patches.

You keep complaining though. Let me know how that works out. Try some bitterness in there and assumptive judgement. I hear it tastes like frosting!

I understand that this was an unforeseen issue and thanks to PGI for developing a game I am passionate about.

Unfortunately, that same passion becomes frustration when a highly anticipated feature goes back to the workshop. I've been following the social media streams from Devs and I got really pumped up about this.

I've been talking up this launch module with my friends who are still on-the-fence with MechWarrior (they've put a few bucks in for new mechbays but play very irregularly) and explaining that the games will be closer and hopefully more fun. They are tired of being stomped by Assaults. I've been grinding Centurions to round out my Medium roster which is a nightmare with the current Elo-only, unlimited weight matchmaking.

The fact is, I didn't even bother playing a game on patch day when I found out the LM was pulled. I hope we get some sort of token of good will from PGI because my Premium time is ticking away and I've simply lost the desire to play the game in its current state.

Highly anticipated feature? It has put me right off playing this game (and spending any money on it) since it was announced

3-3-3-3 has a fundamental problem.
the parameters of elo and weight are elastic, means the matchmakers bend those untill he can find a match solution as close as possible to the ideal, up to the point that 12 trialspiders, piloted by totaly new players, will be matched against 12 betatester veterans with highlanders and ddc´s but there will be a match no matter how far away from the ideal.
the 3-3-3-3 in contrast is a hard criteria. if noone plays a medium mech there will simply be no matches at all, faild to find a match for every one after a painfull waitingtime. so as long as there is a disparity in mechclasspreference it MUST always result in x amount of matches failing depending on the disparity.
3-3-3-3-3 can ONLY work if eaqual numbers of players try to play in the 4 different weightclasses.
no matter how you tweak the matchmaking logic, if the matchmaker cant find 3 mediums in the playerpool it can not start a match.
the 3-3-3-3 can not work for the public queue as the differnt weightclasses will ALWAYS be differently represented in the waiting player pool.
the reason the problem did not appear in the privat matches because you can simply not hit the startbutton untill your lobby confirms to the 3-3-3-3 format, the players will switch mechs untill it fit . in the pug queue this option simply dont exist.
all the examples i used are based on the assumption that mediums are the smallest group in the queue witch is or is not tru. this was only used to illustrate the problem, the therm medium can be replaced with whatever weightclass is played least.

conclusion: 3-3-3-3 is impossible outside 12man premade as it will only allow the least popular weightclass to find matches

That's actually easily fixable by the community alone (with a help of pgi) as long as it gets the information required.
If there's really a big discrepancy in the numbers of different weight classes queueing, then the solution would be to show the avarage size of people queued (4 bars with percentage) for each weight class, either after queueing or even bofore that. The information presented could be narrowed down by a few elo brackets. Being able to cancel the queue, u could switch the mech and help every1.

Imagine, if you will, a status screen. It says, "Mechs currently queued for match:", and then it has a list of weight classes. Next to those weight classes are numbers. Numbers that say how many of that type of mech is queued.

Then imagine, if you will, a player who is trying to queue for a match as an Assault. He notices that there are 35 players queued as Assault, 23 players queued as Heavy, 5 players queued as Medium, and 18 players queued as Light. He gets tired of waiting, so he cancels his match and switches to his Hunchback.

Now imagine, if you will, all 81 of these players trying to join matches. They aren't joining at the same time. Some are joining earlier, and some are joining later. Some have to wait more time, and some have to wait less time. At some point, there will be enough of every class to play.

Now let's further imagine that people don't play the classes equally. Say - 27% Assault, 27% Heavy, 27% Light, and 19% Medium. This means that, on average, you've got 24% of the available players waiting for a match. Of course it might be a little more because we've got to wait for 6 players of each type.

Now, I want you to do something for me. Go to Wikipedia, and look up the term 'impossible'. Then feel shame.

I think, they should cut the public matches in two half (when just for provisionally for try out that this idea works or not.)

1. "Group A": MM with Rules of 3.
2. "Group B": Old MM.

If someone wants play 3/3/3/3 in any case, then he could choose "Group A". OK, he must perhaps wait a bit more, or (in the worst case) change his Mechs-class after some try, but if he really want 3/3/3/3, then he should receive it.

But if someone just wants a quick game, or for any reason can't change his Mechs (example: leveling), then he should be able to play "Group B". Yes, perhaps he becomes some strange, unbalanced team, but the search-time is minimal and he could play anyway.

The 3/3/3/3 rule is too strict, it shouldn't be used for every public matches. It's the same, as for example everyone must play in 3PV mode the whole time...

PS. OK, it is an other way to 3/3/3/3: when the MM choose out the Mech you could play from your own+trial Mechs... But who would like play such a game?

Imagine, if you will, that people don't play the classes equally. Say - 27% Assault, 27% Heavy, 27% Light, and 19% Medium. This means that, on average, 81% will be matched within one matching-cycle. So, the 24% that was in queue for the first matchmaking-cycle didn't get matched. Imagine further that the 24% that didn't get matched in the first matching-cycle now has queued all the way to the front for the second matching-cycle.

This will lead to longer (not endless) waiting times for Assault, Heavy and Lights. All the while Mediums will be matched every first matching-cycle. After a while a thing called natural selection will take care of the rest.

Will player base suffer? Most likely.
Impossible? Definitely not.

Signed. I'd rather play a steamroll-risk game than sit there waiting.

3-3-3-3 is / was great for the one game I played in it. Being a medium pilot the theory of 3-3-3-3 is a lifeline. I'm so tired of facing assault mech after assault mech it's really boring. Reading Nikos post it would appear we have to wait at least two weeks for them to fix whatever broke? This is sad news.

No, what would be sad news is the 4th time PGI tells us it will be 2 weeks. So, buck up little camper, it could be worse.
