When I log on and see a friend online and send them a message they never see it. If they are already in a match they don't get the message until they leave and if they are actually out of a match they never notice that the little microscopic icon at the bottom of the UI is trying to get their attention.
I wind up calling them on the phone but I'm wondering how other people deal with this.

To my knowledge there isn't a tone but the lil button with people on it blinks when I have a Message. I don't always see it in time, but It does slowly blink.

I tend to text them, and we end up in TS, where we can freely communicate. The in-game social functions are...lacking.

Looks like my post got moved to where most of the people will never see it. I know how the in game chat works; my problem is that it just doesn't work. Unless they add in popup windows or toast notifications to the UI the existing friends list and chat is next to useless.

A mod probably saw that you have 2 posts and didn't look at the fact that you've been a member since December 2012...saw your question and put it here.
Make a 'feature suggestion' post if you have ideas on how to improve it.

Yeah it could definitely use some improvement in visibility, there's plenty of gaps in the new UI they need to hammer out.

Chat is broken. If you send a message and the other person is in a drop they don't get it. It is very difficult to contact someone who isn't looking at their friends list already.

I made the feature suggestion post. I wish this was a Steam game so I could just have the Steam overlay in game and this would be a non issue. Steam overlay doesn't seem to work in MWO unless you run Steam with administrator privileges and then launch MWO from Steam which my friends always forget to do.

I usually end up using google chat on my cell phone. It's almost impossible to catch someone's attention with the in-game chat.
