Off topic, I wish someone would make another game like homeworld (2) but with improved graphics. It's been 10 years, They should be able to develop something epic by now.

Gearbox Software (AKA BORDERLANDS) has that IP now.

I still play Wing Commander-like games on a near weekly basis (Freespace 2 mods a la www.hard-light.net) and at least a few times a year, I play one of the Wing Commander games themselves. I ponied up some money. Chris and his team look like they have their heads in the right spot.

The way i see it atm, SC either wont deliver as promised or min system spec's are going to **** off a lot of backers. That said i'm in for a 300i :(

Edit: oh and given the ingame shots/vids i already can't wait for the (est) december alpha to see how well RSI has fared with Cryengine

Star Citizen is a brand new IP made by a company with no publisher. This means they can do whatever, whenever as long as they have the money.

MWO is a licensed IP from a TT game not owned by either PGI or IGP. Owners of the IP get a say in what happens in anything that using their IP. Also PGI has a publisher and a number of silent backers that are helping fund MWO, because they are helping PGI make this game they get a say in what happens. This mean that PGI is limited to what they can and cannot do with their game.

I do wish that this game was handled the way SC is being handled but I know exactly why it is not and it is not because the Dev's don't care. It's because they don't have control. They just do what they are told.

That being said. I can't wait for Start Citizen. I hope it is going to be amazing.

Is Star Citizen actually in the Wing Commander universe?

I wasn't sure if Chris Roberts actually owned that IP or not.

No. Completely new IP from the ground up. Bad guys are not closet furries and look a lot more badass this time........ although there is slight kilrathi influence in some of the design

If you guys don't think that when Alpha/Beta SC comes out that there weren't be hordes - hordes - of complaint threads, you're crazy and/or blinded by {Noble MechWarrior} fascination; and this is coming from a Wing Commander nut and fellow buy-in. Again, look at history, look at what hype is and how often reality fails to meet it. If you guys really want to set yourselves up to be disappointed, that's fine.

I still can't believe that a couple of flashy videos and a bit of developer communication that people are banking on Star Citizen as a 'no fail guarantee'. Ever hear of Age of Conan? Hell, how about Star Wars: The Old Republic? Think that did well? I'm pretty sure that the much-abused but most beloved IP in the world, a vaporized several hundred million dollars, and the reputation of of one of the most creative developers (BioWare), would like to talk to you, then.

The consistent, "this sucks, but the next game on the horizon will be awesome!" approach is unfathomable, but very much in tune with the lack of patience that people display these days. Star Citizen will have the exact same problems - perhaps even more - you will see. I'm a Wing Commander nut myself, but Christ Roberts hasn't done anything in over a decade, and right now the only intergalactic thing he's churning out is 'hype'-erdrive.

Just signed up for SC too, and gifted a pledge package to a friend too.

Sorry PGI, my phoenix package money went to Chris Roberts.

The guy is a gaming legend and does have a track record of designing multiple epic hit games. This is going to be his magnum opus and he has full control over it. Odds are in his favor of not farking it all up.

Haha, all you founders are making the same mistake. Putting money into something you're not sure of, again.

There is no guarantee, but the guy has a proven track record of making some of the best games of all time.

It's his expertise that I'm betting on, not videos.

This seems to be a common attitude, but I'm curious.

1. He hasn't done anything relevant in over a decade. More than ten years. If a movie star hasn't put out a great movie in over ten years (and isn't dead), are they still great? Could they still even act?

2. Why won't he "fark it up"? Wing Commander Prophecy was terrible. He doesn't have the backing of a major corporation, and has a fraction of the budget of other games. Star Wars: The Old Republic had several hundred million dollars, the "Star Wars" name, and BioWare (epic game designers) at the helm, and it had all of the same 'pre release' hype Star Citizen does - in other words, it had everything SC did, and more (chiefly money). If a game with more world-wide renown, a better publisher, and more money screwed up... why exactly is SC going to succeed?

I'm not against SC. I like it, I bought in... but the amount of "OMG it's gonna be sexy times!" that I'm seeing is so absolutely groundless.

Star Citizen is an interesting concept, but it's still pretty much just a concept at this point. Game won't be out for at least 2 years, probably longer. The hangar preview thing comes out in December I think, but that's just a preview. People are also setting themselves up to be disappointed by it, the amount of self-hyping some are doing isn't going to do them any favors.

This is not true. I'm sure of Chris Roberts. He has history... apparently I'm not the only one.

I actually knew PGI was a gamble before I bought founders. They have a meh history and no success in multiplayer deathmatch "tactical" games. We just seemingly have lost the gamble. :x

Months before release, still mid-Beta, throwing in the spade already.

I can't wait to see people posting these exact same messages on the Star Citizen boards. It will happen. Guaranteed.
