I would like to request that dead player's chat messages not be visible to the living players. I have seen multipile instances of players reporting on enemies after they are dead. Full confession, I have even given tactics suggestions to my still living teammates. The only real benefit I can see to having this available is when someone is disconnected/afk. The problem though is that this can be used to report on a person who is still trying to get kills/survive. What do you guys think?

This is similar to another forum I just got through visiting, something about muting players and not playing with them. This idea of yours is not bad and in order for it to work all they would have to do is make spectate chat a different channel. This is also a double bladed sword though while it adds a sense of realism it can effect the games appearance as being overly unforgiving to new players. Lastly lets be honest most of the time you see hate messages anyways. On that note I cant agree with it 100%. Lets say we are in a skirmish game and I hide then power down with 9- 10 mins left in the game and I am the only one left. Most other people could also use a third party chat/VOIP service, which would be very unfair.

I had forgotten about voip and how this at least provides some communication for people not on voip. It is still frustrating that people can call out our locations but then again being on voip with your team mates allows the same type of screen watching and communication when dead.

Indeed. Report them.

I've only ever seen it abused a couple times in the past year..usually, if they're calling out a location, it's on an AFK/Disconnect player.. or just the fact that he's DC'd in assault/conquest games.

Abuse should be reported.

I see it once a night in "skirmish" mode.
one of the last to live scoots off to hide and the taunts and spotters come alive.

reporting is a tool that literally is supposed to make you feel good, but does nothing- report all you want, nothing comes of it.
Due to my time zone I see three who team shoot, team kill with such frequency I remember their names. They're still around.

Have you reported them once, or have you reported them every time you witnessed them doing it?

One offense usually doesn't result in a ban. Repeated rule violations do, if they get reported.

I have mixed feeling about this. I do think players telling the location of their teammate to the enemy is kind of an a-hole thing to do (unless it's a disconnect/AFK) but having a light being the last one alive cowering in some corner for the remainder of the match can get tedious.

I think I have to lean towards allowing dead players to chat because what if they wanna chat about things not involving last player's location (overall, players revealing the location of the last one alive is rare so taking away the ability to chat after dying would punish more who don't deserve it than those who do).

Sure, dead players could be limited to chatting with each other but that would still be rather limiting if they have something they really wanna talk about to alive players such as discussing players they have noticed violating rules of conduct or something or talk about what mech setups they're using.

I personally don't mind trying to find a shutdown survivor. The last time it happened, it was on River City Night which made it even more complicated and entertaining (I prefer a shutdown hider over someone running around, unable to be caught (if they're still fighting back rather than just running, then I don't mind because they are still putting up a fight)) but perhaps I'm just weird that way.

Dead 'Mech != dead pilot.

The graduates of one of the Federation Suns' most prestigious 'mechwarrior academies would wear a bit of slag from the first 'mech shot out from under them as a memento of that first 'Mech. And there were large numbers of dispossessed mechwarriors. If a dead 'mech meant a dead pilot, then neither of these would have been the case.

'Mechwarriors actually have a fairly good chance of surviving their 'mechs becoming scrap. The cockpits are designed to withstand quite a bit, combined with the ejection systems, and that means that there is a high probability that a pilot will not only still be alive, but also have communications intact as well.

Negative...people who are dead can provide reliable Intelligence information, as well as gives them an opportunity to point out suggestions to new players.

Mechwarriors,

Dead men tell no tales. I have been on several drops where a disabled mechwarrior clogged up the comms channels while we struggled to sort out commands from our lance leader. The best advice for this is to make sure your lancemates know that they should be dead silently so as not to overwhelm the already spotty communication systems we have been running. Turncoats should be punished accordingly and if they are spying for the enemy after being disabled run by and give them a swift kick in the cockpit, that should prevent future outbursts.

Corporal Woolf signing off...

The thing to do would be to simply disable global chat for dead players, but leave team chat & lance chat enabled - fallen players would still be able to communicate with their still-active teammates (to provide advice, suggestions, and coaching), but things like "bird-dogging" (that is, giving up a teammate's position to the opponents) or cross-team abuse by the fallen would become impossible via in-game means (and if you've got teammates on the same out-of-game comms (Skype, TS, GChat, Mumble, etc) as the opposing team & relaying information to the same, then you've other problems...).

I think the "dead" being able to give coordinates for griefers who shut down to hide should not be curbed. This has become less rampant in 4 mans recently, and it is predominantly curbed solely because people will police their own.

I can agree, in that it lends a sense of "realism", but this game is not realistic. I admit, it can be quite irritating having some guy complaining about "OP Weapons" or whatever killed him, but I have also had matches where the intel provided by disabled team mates has allowed what might have been a Stomp to become a narrow loss, or even a minor victory.

And I can understand the complaint about being pinged, IF the player in question is actually trying to meaningfully contribute to the match, but if it's a forgone conclusion that the match is a loss, and some muppet decides to hide in a corner to pad his precious K/D (most pointless stat ever in a Team game), then I have no Qualms about handing over his location to the enemy. Hell, a match I was in last night, a pair of spiders managed to take down 3 mechs before they finally died *cough* ECM OP *cough*, and I say good on them. THAT is what you should be doing, if your the last survivor. Trying to inflict as much damage as you can before you go down. And I get that sometimes an Ambush is the best way to do it. What confuses me is how you intend to ambush someone from the other side of the map.... anyways, I'm ranting.

TL:DR: Until there is a reason to try and preserve your mech (R&R reinstated, or CW has some sort of perseverance mechanic) I see nothing wrong with locating players that are merely trying to preserve their precious (USELESS) K/D Stat.

I'm not big on selling out the location of my still-living teammates once I bite the dust but if others want to that's their prerogative IMO.

I do know that if "post-mortem" chat goes then so will I as a spectator, unless I'm spectating someone with whom I can comm outside the game. Might as well just strip out the entire spectate feature if spectator chat is removed, as far as I'm concerned.

Are you saying it is alright to shutdown with 9 minutes left in a match?

My short answer:

No. This is not a good idea.

As I said in a similar thread, this only hurts those who are not dropping in groups. The dead providing intel on what killed them is not unfair as far as I am concerned. In the same light, a watching player can only provide the information of the pilot they are following.

Lances will continue to use voice communication to coordinate and provide information via third party programs like TS/skype.

Reporting active team-mates location to the enemy and being abusive is reportable and I encourage people to take the time to do so when the line is crossed. 'Muting' for this is overkill.
