What Does Motion Blur Even Do?

Like... what does it blur and when? I can't tell a difference with it on or off. Sometimes mechs get a ghosting effect as they move, but it looks uninentional, almost like screen tearing (v-sync is on).

That's motion blur. I dunno why, but PGI's motion bur is awful. Unfortunately, you can't turn it off. Well, you can, but it doesn't work.

Welcome to working as intended. No, seriously... so far as anyone can tell, since DX 11 was disabled in closed beta that's a combination of working as intended (even when disabled) and anti-aliasing.
To properly turn off the ghosting effect you have to turn off anti-aliasing.
I'm not kidding.

At the beginning of this, you can hear the frustration of the popular MWO photographer was having with trying to remove the motion blur because with every single patch they ruin it even more. That's after 45 minutes of tweaking the game to look halfway decent, to wind up being forced to use their DX-11 TXAA to remove the blur this time, which was awful and inefficient.

Tied to the shotgun for component damage. Has so much ammo it doesn't matter if some of it is wasted while firing the shotty at longer ranges.

I thought it was obvious what it's for, making it look like we're going really fast. Fear my Orion running at a blistering 72 Kph. It's so fast, it can outrun an Atlas. ;)

Even that doesn't work ;) I wish I could turn it off. Then again, it only shows up at close range (when it slams my FPS).

DX11 or 9? On 9 it works (for most cards). On 11 you have to turn on the TXAA (which'll burn out some older graphics cards). On 11 you have to turn on MSAA.

MSAA


TXAA is a feature only for people with Nvidia 600/700 series cards

DX9. I still get it, never had AA turned on.

In the patch notes here we got some official info on user config options. While not on the list I believe you can add this to remove the motion blur completely:

r_MotionBlur = 0

Motion blurr is PGIs answer to the forumites.

PGI Henchmen: The white and black knights are at war again sir! The black ones are winning this time with the HSR SRM banner.

Doctor Russ: Turn their motion blur back on Number One, that will quiet the peasants down.

The issue with ghosting (not technically motion blur) is known and registered as a bug. (No, I am not looking for that dev post, it was in patch feedback somewhere.)

Cockpit glass and the HDR grain effect can now be disabled via user.cfg. Note that most fog/haze effects are still with us, WAD.

I honestly never noticed motion blur and I kinda like the cockpit glass...then again that's me and i'm sure about 15 people are gonna find it weird that someone likes it.

Negligible, not very noticeable on LOW, but they should give you options to disable the stuff you don't want.

But the ghosting is where the blur is supposed to be?

As an aside, here is the thing about motion blur as an effect. It doesn't mimic anything our eyes do. It mimics what cameras do. It's totally bizarre.
