the theory of smaller missile groups getting more CT hits is technically true, but ultimately you are (likely) playing to make cash and you are always better off firing off alphas to maximize damage (and cash) since you never know when you'l lose target contact and the first volley may be the only one to hit
i mix up my missile launchers (LRM5s with bigger LRMs) to kill ghost heat so my rule of thumb is i'l do an alpha on the initial volley, and if i see AMS reaching up i'l wait until all my launchers are ready to do followup alphas for max damage, otherwise if there's no AMS resistance i'l just keep firing volleys as fast as the mounts recharge

Are Lrm's Better In Chain Fire Or Grouped?

It's also notable that a series of small launchers is the best attrition method to degrade a heavy AMS grid- something we'll see more of with the Clans and their Kit Fox-C ECM/triple AMS mounts being a total missile skunker.
Have I mentioned that if you get a clean shot at these with LRM users on your team, BLOW THE ARM OFF? No? Do it. It's likely the easiest ECM/AMS system to disable in the game.

I chain fire when:
- heat is an issue
- AMS isn't an issue, like late game
- I'm trying to see if cover is going to mess me up - I'll fire just one launcher
I group fire when:
- Target may have AMS and I want more to get through
- I think I'm losing the lock quickly and want to dump damage down range
I'll add that I love LRM skirmishers, but rarely run more than 30 tubes. Still, have the best overall KDR on my Griffins than any of my other mechs.
